The Canadian health care system is far from perfect and I often complain about it, but the truth is that any other alternative would surely be a lot more expensive for us. As parents we have already taken advantage of our health care system many, many times. Shall I start with our fertility issues and subsequent treatment, or the specialist doctor visits for each of my pregnancies, or the three C-sections and subsequent hospital stays? Later on I also stayed at the Children’s Hospital for five days with our newborn son, as he slept utterly adorable in sunglasses under jaundice-fighting blue lights. We regularly visited physiotherapists at the Children’s Hospital with our other two daughters, we often see our pediatrician, and we have accessed other services.
Then you have to look at your budget. If you don’t have one, now is most definitely the time to make one. You can create a simple spread sheet in Microsoft Excel like I did and list each and every bill, including every credit card debt or loan payment you have. I even included due dates and minimum amounts. You can also use a free online budget system like mint.com or everydollar.com. I also checked  stay at home budget calculators like this one by Parents magazine.
For the best top-ups and parental conditions overall, it’s still hard to beat the unionized workplace, such as schools, the postal service, and liquor stores (only in Canada, eh?). Employees who happen to work in such sectors, where active unions have hammered out strong collective agreements, usually have downright enviable entitlements. Sneak peek: federal government employees will get their entire year of parental leave topped up to 93% of their usual salary, and they can take up to another four years unpaid parental leave. Five years later their boss may not remember them, but these lucky parents are still guaranteed a comparable job with the same salary.

A recent study found that moms are spending too much time with their kids. The Mommy Wars pressures make stay-at-home moms feel like they're not a worthy member of society while making working moms feel like they're not spending enough time with their children. While the study above says moms are spending too much time with their kids with no scientifically proven difference in their outcomes, a Highland Spring study of 10,000 families revealed parents are only spending 34 uninterrupted minutes a day with their children because of the stresses of daily life.
I do it! I have enough diapers to last 2.5 days. I try to throw them in the wash sometime after baby bedtime and then hang them out overnight. That doesn't always happen so sometimes it's hanging dry during the day. Sometimes its drying them all in the dryer. I have disposable back ups if I just run out of time and do the diapers a day late. That is rare though. It usually isn't a problem.

Hi Emily! yes that must be such a tough decision to make. It sounds like you have a great recipe for success for moving to a work at home situation with your background and experience. I always recommend that women stick with what they already know when making this transition. One option would be to look for companies that offer remote working for their employees, many do and many will if you ask. Alternately, you could start your own consulting business. Maybe there’s a specific need that you see in your line of work that you feel you could fill. I know it is scary to take that leap and leave your secure corporate job. In the end, I guess it comes down to which option is best for your family (and I am not saying there’s a ‘right’ answer here. It’s tough, so no guilt either way!) Kids having time with their parents is important, moms having the margin to love their kids well is important, putting a roof over your heads and food on the table is also crucial! I would also add that maybe you can think through changes you can make on the spending side to help offset the loss of income if you quit your job to work from home. In fact, you may actually save money by staying home simply by commuting less, having more time to cook rather than eat out, less childcare etc. I pray you’ll find just the right thing for you and your family Emily!
Every working parent dreams of being able to spend more time with their children, whether or not they love their careers. But is choosing to work from home the right choice for you? Could you manage to balance all the demands on your time? Would you lose too much of yourself? These are important questions to ask before jumping in with both feet. It isn’t easy, even if it can be enormously worth it!

I’m a new mom, before my baby I was a college student staying on campus while working at a daycare. Now I’m back at home trying to rebuild myself. I desire to work but I take care of my daughter 100% of the time. What are some jobs that I can do based from home with no concern about background noise or strictly from a computer. All these moms up here are a great inspiration and I hope to one day be the same to another new mom :)
What you said Natasha!!! I am scared as well but kind of encouraged after reading all of the success stories. I have been at my current job for 6 years as well and am due in October. At 16 weeks I have already had complications with this pregnancy and am battling my employer on following my doctor’s orders. Despite doctor’s notes from emergency room visits my supervisor does not comprehend my high risk pregnancy. I never would have thought about being a SAHM until now. I loved this article and have found hope that I can do this!

All Zany Zebra products are created in a non-smoking home which is shared with three loving kitties. While the kitties aren't much help with sewing, they do occasionally lend their own unique natural fibers to the products. I do check each product very carefully before shipping, however sometimes a hair manages to sneak past me. Laundering before use will remove any of their loving, but misguided, additions.

After earning a college degree in English, I married and had three kids. So now I’m a self taught seamstress and mostly take in clothes for alterations. With baby #3 very new, I’m not taking in much right now; my goal by next year is to bring in $800/mo. I’ve done everything from patching holes, recovering cushions, hemming prom dresses and fixing tattered toddler dress up clothes.
Daycare and other larger scale childcare services can get expensive. To figure out your earning potential, shop around to find out what daycare centers are charging in your area. Coming in a bit under their prices might help make it more affordable for friends and family who need childcare, while still providing an excellent source of supplemental income for you.

So to recap – scams are plentiful but not hard to recognise; finding a legitimate work at home position for a company is hard to find but not impossible, and starting your own company or joining a direct sales company is simple but not easy and not guaranteed to be profitable either. In the end, there’s no easy answer to what opportunity will be right for you. Just be sure to take your time deciding and don’t jump into anything, especially if you’re handing over your credit card.

Hey there @Melissa, I know you didn’t originally post to me, but I work for Younique, selling cosmetics at home. What I love about the company is that they focus on selling on social media and the internet, which makes it really convenient. Plus the company and my uplines are so positive and supportive! Not to mention the product is great, so that helps! I would love to talk more about it with you!

A lot of jobs are not advertised and as the saying goes, sometimes its who you know. I know you are doing everything you can, and with regard to having a little one and finding a job that not only pays the bills but fits in the school time table 9-4 can be extremely difficult, especially because like you said, a Bachelors Degree is the new High School Diploma.

Another way to get affordable child care: Pool your resources with several other working moms and hire one babysitter to watch all your children at the same time. Even without the sitter, you can get together with other WAHMs and let the kids play while you all work. "I found that if a child has a playdate, he or she is often amused long enough to allow you to do work that doesn't require extreme quiet," says freelance writer Melissa Dutton, of Columbus, Ohio, who also sometimes swapped child care for her two kids with another working mom a few hours a week. "I knew that she worked from home, too, so I offered to take her kid first, and it grew from there."

Her other kid-centric tips: Set aside a few cool toys that your kids can play with, or arrange playdates or special movie viewings only during "Mommy's work time." If your children have something to look forward to, they'll be less likely to interrupt you. You can also try setting up an activity center in your home office so kids feel as if they have their own designated place to do projects while you catch up on e-mails. If their interest in that fails, create a "boredom bowl," suggests Durst.

Working full-time at home isn’t for the faint of heart. It requires focus, discipline, motivation, and an ability to fight through the day-to-day isolation. It takes a certain personality to love it and thrive at it. But of the work-at-home warriors out there, there is a select group of which I am constantly in awe. Work-at-home moms who are also caring for young children full time. These are the parents who are genuinely trying to “have it all,” all at once, difficulties or not.

By this time I had more diapers than Zach needed, but loved creating them so much I couldn't stop. There were so many adorable fabrics just begging me to make them into a cloth diapers. I started trading my cloth diapers for other items so I could keep creating, and got rave reviews from the mamas who received my diapers. When my husband needed to go from full time to half time work so he could student teach I thought it was the perfect time to open my own cloth diapering business. I could share my love for cloth diapers, fulfill my need to create, and help out with the family finances too. Zany Zebra Designs was born! My goal for this business is to provide helpful information and high quality products so you will love using cloth diapers as much as I do!
I have babysitters come to my home to watch our son and entertain him for roughly 10 hours each week. While I have a babysitter, I normally take advantage of that time to work on my most important and/or most complicated tasks for the week. Also during that time, I normally leave to work at a coffee house. My son interacts better with the babysitter that way, and I can focus better on my job. – Ashleigh

I work as well and 3 out of the 5 work days I don't get home from work until 7pm or later. I put DD to bed and throw the laundry in. Before I go to bed I throw stuff in the dryer and then hang up the covers. It's no big deal. I also make sure to do a load of laundry on the weekend, so I'm now only doing one load of diaper laundry during the work week.
Career and Workplace. How family friendly your employer is can play a huge role in how difficult it will be to stay home or continue working. Even before you have a baby, look for a job that will be respectful of your family's values. "If your employer is not flexible of working parents ... then it's going to make working that much harder," says Morgan Steiner. If you decide to stay home, determine how likely it will be for you to return to your job or career. To help keep competitive while at home, Jacqueline Plumez, PhD, a psychologist and career counselor in Larchmont, N.Y., proposes keeping current in your profession by taking classes, working part time, or volunteering in projects related to your career. Yasgoor also recommends joining professional associations or attending networking events.
See Picture 1 for samples of sizes. Wetbags come in many different sizes, and different makers may have different dimensions. As a rule of thumb, a mini or xs will fit wipes that are predampened with water or wipe solution for outings. A small wetbag fits 2-3 diapers, a medium fits 4-6, and a large fits 10-12. Some companies even have an XL. Pail liners are also available, and these are large enough to go in a 40 liter garbage can for putting dirty diapers in before they go through their wash routine.
This is a post I’ve been wanting to write for a long time! In a way it’s a follow up to my post on How to Afford to Be a Stay at Home Mom article. And in a way it is at the crux of everything I write about here at Affording Motherhood. In that article, I noted how the average mother only needs to make up $700 per month in order to afford to be a stay at home mom, after taking out all the costs of going to work.

Many Etsy sellers list their items and rarely get any sales.  If that happens, it’s probably because you haven’t done a very good job getting the word out.  One of the easiest ways to do that is to simply make a few free samples of your items and mail them to bloggers who write about the type of thing you make.  They can keep the item for free if they’ll write about it in a blog post.  If you get a few blogs to mention you who have traffic, you could make tons of sales!
After reading this blog I decided to try one of the places – Clickworker – thought it was right up my alley. I assume these are legit online businesses, but unfortunately, as soon as I signed up with all my information – my Facebook account was hacked! I’m concerned as to what else might happen, but hoping that was it and my account at Clickworker was closed fast enough. Just be careful….

Because data entry jobs don’t often require any additional skills outside of typing, expect stiff competition for them from another stay-at-home job seekers, including other moms. Your best bet is to use platforms like UpWork to extend your reach beyond your networking circles. Even then, don’t get frustrated if it takes you a while to build a regular client list.

I am a stay at home Mom with a part-time work from home job. For the past 3 years, I have had the blessing of being the secretary and office manager for a small Hydrovacing company. I have been able to do all the work from home until this past summer. It’s had it challenging times, but I’ve learned so much and have knowledge on how to start your own business because of it. Now, our youngest, age 3, goes with me 3 days a week for a few hours. We have 4 children- 16, 14, 7 and 3. I have also sold things on local sales sites for extra income. I have been at home since our oldest was born. We’ve made sacrifices, but didn’t see them as sacrifices. It was choices to support our decision to have me at home. We made that decision before we married almost 23 years ago. And, we are both thankful and blessed by it.
