This would include a vehicle, maintenance, gasoline, car insurance, etc. To make it easier to calculate for this example, I am going to just use the $0.345 a mile that the government allowed as a mileage reimbursement at the time I was working. (Currently, this mileage reimbursement is over 50c a mile). I drove 5 miles everyday to drop the kids off at daycare, 6.5 miles from daycare to work, and back again, every day. This would be 23 miles a day, 20 days a month. Total 460 miles per month, or about $160.
It's important to line up your day carefully, with set "office" hours. How many hours do you hope to work that day? When will you return calls? What can you accomplish while your son or daughter is coloring in the next room? You'll get more done if you work smarter, not harder, says Christine Durst, a mom of two in Woodstock, Connecticut, and cofounder of ratracerebellion.com, a site that helps people find work-at-home jobs. That said, one of the best benefits of working at home is flexibility, especially if you are your own boss. If your son or daughter is fussing during your office hours and it's a beautiful day, it's okay to push assignments aside and go to the park. You can catch up on work later when your cutie has settled down.
And yet, in Edmonton where I grew up, private schools are almost nonexistent and a huge majority of children go through a high quality public or public Catholic system. Which leads me to believe that Ottawa may be a rather extreme outlier as far as the rest of Canada is concerned, perhaps due to all those diplomats and public servants in Canada’s capital. Parents in much of the rest of Canada (naturally excepting Vancouver and Toronto) can probably rest easy and keep their retirement savings, knowing that their children are not missing out by going to public school because after all, there are hardly any private schools to send them to.
Flexible spending (dependent-care) accounts offered by many employers allow employees to set aside up to $5,000 of income before taxes annually to pay for child care. Higher-bracket couples can save up to $150 monthly in federal/local income tax, and FICA deductions versus paying with after-tax funds. Even without such accounts, the federal child-care credit can save (per child, up to two children) higher-income families about $50 per month and lower-income families up to $1,050 annually. Note: You can choose only one of these two methods each year. (To find out more, see Money Saving Year-End Tax Tips and How can I use a child tax credit?)
While you may have to give up a few luxuries in exchange for more time with your kids, there are also many alternatives to making a little extra cash. Maybe your employer is open to you working part-time or from home, or perhaps you can get hired as a freelancer for on a project basis. Some working mothers have been able to trade longer workdays Monday through Thursday for having Fridays off. And don’t underestimate picking up that old waitressing job that got you through college. It’s a great way to make extra cash without having to bring any work home with you.
I’m sure you’ve heard of or even purchased items from Etsy, the most well-known website for buying and selling homemade items. If you are crafty and can create products that people would be interested in buying, this can be a very lucrative work from home opportunity. The categories of items that are the most popular include: home decor, jewelry, clothing, toys, craft supplies, and kids/babies.
Let's face it: it can be difficult to stay a stay at home mom and live off of one-income in a two-income society. Add to that the extra expenses that a new baby brings to the family, and it can be very tempting to have mom get a job for the extra income. After all, it seems hard to find ways to cut expenses; wouldn't it just be easier to make more money?

What’s a WAHM? A WAHM is a work at home Mom. For someone like me, who blogs about cloth diapers, a WAHM is someone who designs, sews, sells and mails out cloth diapers! In addition to diapers, many WAHM shops also make handmade clothing and other reusable items like toilet un-paper! I wanted to feature amazing WAHM shops I know and have worked with in this event.

If you are like I was and only have high school, your job prospects will be limited, especially if working evenings and weekends are an issue. Even "some university" is really the same as "no university" when it comes to potential employers, trust me. I've been to enough interviews to realize this. If you have family or friends close by that can help out, make sure you find out specifically what they are willing to help you out with. Are they ok with watching your kids if you need to work weekends? Do you have 2 extra back-up sitters or help when they can't take care of them? What is the daycare situation like? Are your children happy there?
I just completed reading hundreds of posts relating to the vast opportunities to work from home. Some sell jewelry, some pedal cosmetics or essential oils. Those are great ideas for the natural-born salesperson. Some are bloggers and write for income. That sounds interesting but requires a great level of writing skill. I read several posts from the creative and crafty who actually create things to sell on a popular shopping site.
I started our Etsy shop when our daughter was 6 months old and I stopped working full time away from home. It initially started out as a way to earn a little extra money but we’ve put a lot of energy into it the last two years and have grown our Etsy shop to be one of our family’s primary sources of income. Our Etsy shop is MontanaSolarCreations. I also write a blog, Montana Homesteader, about our adventures in modern day homesteading. I monetized the blog and started making money with it the first month we started it. It is now about 8 months old and it has been making enough money each month to pay some of our monthly household bills – Annie Bernauer at Montana Solar Creations.
We cloth diapered with our first two and we had a super easy system (one size diapers–like Motherease–covered by simple Velcro covers–Bummis). Easy. Really. However, I have to make a plug for diaper-free babies! Our third, we practiced what is sometimes called “elimination communication.” I thought it would be hard, but I would do it again in a moment. Those first days are chaotic anyway and it was great to have a happy baby (whenever she would fuss, we went potty, and almost always, voila) and one that didn’t require any sort of diapering! It’s probably not of interest to everyone, but it might be worth a try for some.
3. At the end of the day we bring home the bag of dirty diapers.  I take the dirty ones out of the bag and put them in our even larger wet bag at home.  The daycare workers close up the dirties like they would a disposable.  We don’t ask them to fasten laundry tabs or pull out inserts.  If there are any number 2 diapers I try to spray them off immediately with the diaper sprayer attached to our toilet.

Whether you're an at-home parent homeschooling your child or you're simply there when she gets off the bus after school, more studies are finding a parent at home is giving children an academic edge over their peers without a parent at home. Regardless of whether you stay home or work, the National Education Association's research has proven that parent involvement in schools makes a difference in a child's academic performance and how long she actually stays in school.

Amy – thank you for your post. I couldn’t sleep last night because I was thinking about how tired I am of literally throwing our money away with disposables. But I always told myself that cloth diapers wouldn’t work out for us since I work full time and baby goes to daycare. Last night I did a google search for “working moms cloth diaper” and your blog came up. I really appreciate you sharing your routines and giving your advice, it has helped me realize that this is something we can do, even though we’re both busy parents who work full-time. I’m going to talk to my daughter’s (she’s now 12 mos) daycare tomorrow to see if they will work with me on this and we will at least give it a try. Many thanks to you!
A recent Gallup poll revealed more stay-at-home moms report experiencing sadness or anger in their day than moms who work outside of the home. Of the 60,000 women surveyed, the poll included women with no children, working moms and stay-at-home moms who are or who are not looking for work "to distinguish between those who may not be employed because of circumstance rather than by choice."

These are but a few examples of all the possibilities out there to make income for your family even with a babe in arms. I didn’t even touch on becoming a consultant (like a Stitch Fix stylist in certain cities), or starting your own direct-selling business. Still, you should have plenty of ideas now and feel a little less overwhelmed – by finding a remote job, anyway. I can’t do anything about baby worries!

As premiums rise an average more than 10% annually - while benefits shrink - open enrollment each fall gives couples who both work a chance to reevaluate which plan will work best financially (sometimes dividing coverage to have Spouse A in one plan, and Spouse B plus children in the other). This option is most critical when both work for smaller employers who often chase the lowest plan price tag and change plans every year. Note: Check for coverage of pre-existing conditions when considering change.
Work-from-home jobs for moms are available for moms with infants, those seeking supplemental income or a bit of extra pocket change, and those able to juggle more demanding at home careers for stay at home moms. The latter includes both part-time work for stay-at-home moms and full-time positions. Most jobs for stay-at-home moms offer exceptional work-life balance.
The Canadian health care system is far from perfect and I often complain about it, but the truth is that any other alternative would surely be a lot more expensive for us. As parents we have already taken advantage of our health care system many, many times. Shall I start with our fertility issues and subsequent treatment, or the specialist doctor visits for each of my pregnancies, or the three C-sections and subsequent hospital stays? Later on I also stayed at the Children’s Hospital for five days with our newborn son, as he slept utterly adorable in sunglasses under jaundice-fighting blue lights. We regularly visited physiotherapists at the Children’s Hospital with our other two daughters, we often see our pediatrician, and we have accessed other services.

Teaching English online from home is a great way to make some extra money or bring in a full-time income. Currently, three companies that specialize in teaching English to Chinese children online are in the midst of a hiring push. Online teaching is flexible, and the pay is excellent. It's also rewarding to work with children. The three companies … Read More

Akerson: A completely remote team comes with many benefits, the first of which is we can pull talent from anywhere in the country, and when jobs are posted, our pool of qualified applicants is always overflowing. Another benefit is that worktime is maximized – no commute means more productive working time. Employees LOVE the flexibility of scheduling their working hours around what works best for them and their family. We have a couple of weekly meetings, but otherwise employees are free to work whenever they want. This can mean late nights or early mornings for moms with very small children, but the benefit is truly work-life balance. The biggest benefit is that employees get to be part of a company whose mission they believe in, without worrying that they’re missing out on their children’s lives.
When I was pregnant 16 years ago with our first daughter I had a conversation with my Grandma a few weeks before she went to be with the Lord. I told her there is NO way I could stay home…it’s just not possible on one income. Well, it was possible and the Lord provided a way for me to transition from working at the physical therapy office I was employed with and had done some transcription for by putting me in contact with a local transcription company ran by a husband and wife. I typed for about the first 4 years of her life and then we found that we could indeed live on one income if we prioritized and ran our household differently. And avoided unnecessary items that today’s society in general think are priorities. It has been a wonderful 16 years with my two daughters. I began homeschooling them, too, eight years ago! It’s wonderful and now I don’t have to work at all. When they were small I would buy high end clothing for them and re-sell it to make it a near wash when the clothes were outgrown. Now we enjoy thrift storing almost exclusively and those clothes we don’t ant any longer or don’t fit we sell at consignment shops to make back some money. I regularly go through my house, too, and get rid of things that aren’t being used and sell them on facebook or my areas local selling page. It helps to make back a little!
