"The idea of having her commute to our home office to do customer service didn't make sense," Akerson said. "It was sort of accidental that we hired a parent. Once upon a time, customer service representatives worked in massive call centers in the middle of the Arizona desert ⏤ or overseas. And while many still do, times have changed. Today there are almost 2.75 million reps handling complaints, processing orders, a providing product information around the country and, not only is the number growing, but many are now working from home. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 500,000 customer service reps work part-time. While hardly glamorous, and often requiring you to interact with crappy people on the other end of the line, the positions are often entry-level, provide training, and come with steady hours. The biggest drawback is that a lot of customer service reps work on a full-time shift schedule, so while you will be home, you could be tied down.

Now, back to the bad news. The best way to get a full-time, work-from-home job is to already be employed a company, or in an industry, where people telecommute or work remotely. If you’re an editor or a graphic designer at a magazine, it’s decidedly easier to go freelance or find a publication that doesn’t require you to be in the office than if you’re a bank teller. Same is true of sales jobs, a lot of which can be done at home or in a coffee shop as long as you have a phone and an internet connection. The absolute best way for a parent to get a work-from-home job, assuming they’re in a field that affords the flexibility, is to talk to your employer and work out an arrangement. It’s a simple as that. The boss may say no, but it never hurts to ask.
Working outside the home has its perks, but it also means missing out on some of the biggest moments in your child’s life. Your baby’s first steps, her first “oooohhh” or “ahhhhhh,” and her first giggle are priceless milestones you are likely to miss. Isolation – Being an stay at-home dad can be an isolating experience which can lead to depression. Every at-home parent deals with isolation but this is magnified for at-home dads because our society is still unfamiliar with men taking this role. On the playground, in the grocery store, or at pre-school, at-home dads often feel ignored or sometimes, feared, by the people they encounter. This makes it difficult for at-home dads to feel comfortable in their role or make many adult friends. While the number of men choosing to stay home with their children has more than doubled in the last 10 years, at-home dads still have many difficulties finding and connecting with other at-home dads.
Being a stay-at-home-dad doesn’t mean you need to put your career on the sidelines entirely. At a glance, my life as a woman and work-at-home mother looks like a feminist’s wet dream. I’m college educated with a solid career history filled with escalating job moves and promotions. I’ve had a pretty successful career both as a staff writer and freelancer. I’ve saved thousands on daycare costs (especially when my kids were little). I don’t have to take time off when my kids are home sick. I take conference calls during soccer practices. I still contribute to social security by continuing to work (hope it’s still there when I need it!) There is a bank account with my name on it (not my husband’s). And yes, sometimes, I work in my pajamas.  
I have two small children and found going to a workplace full time was incredibly difficult alongside meeting the children’s needs (and paying for childcare!). It was very scary leaving a place of security and heading towards the unknown of being self-employed and working from home. I believed in myself and took the plunge to teach online for an established company. It was the best decision. The job is fun and energising and I fit it when my kids are at school. My children are happy and calm and I’m not worried about finances.

I have been doing this for about a year now for about an hour each day and i’m making about $350-$500 each month, which isn’t bad considering it’s just meant to be some additional income. Another drag of the work-at-home mom daily grind, is social and professional isolation. For an introvert like me, I think, I could care less about interacting with humans face-to-face all day. Wow thank you so much for this article, I am a single father with 3 under 4 and I’ve been trying to find something for months along the lines of what you have posted here I truly understand the hardship single mothers in general face because I myself am going through that hardship right now.
