Just because a dad chooses to stay at home doesn’t mean he isn’t earning an income. Technology and the internet mean that working in traditional offices is no longer an absolute, or even the norm. According to Global Workplace Analytics, work-from-home positions among non-self-employed workers have grown by 115% since 2005, which is nearly 10 times faster than the rest of the workforce. Additionally, the digital population engaged in virtual, remote employment, telecommuting and flextime has grown immensely, with 45% of U.S. employees working from home, according to a 2015 report by New Jersey Institute of Technology.
I am a STAM working 3 jobs… all part time and from home… (can u believe it?) But really, I started with the mystery shopping, and that was OK. The positive was you get paid, the challenge was not frequently and sometimes needed to wait a month for payment to be transferred to the paypal account. Then I became and infant massage teacher and love this. REDTENTSALE is my Ebay store, I sell so many various items I find from wholesellers and it’s nice, I do this when the kids are asleep; anyone can… very manageable and nice “but light” income. I would say the one by far that is taking me places is Real Estate Marketing.

What It Is: Transcription essentially involves you listening to audio files and typing out what you hear. Easy enough, right? Companies usually hire transcriptionists without much experience, so some job postings might only require you to have a computer and keyboard to get started. Transcription jobs can vary from transcribing a college lecture to a doctor's medical dictation, while most companies allow you to make your own schedule.
Another way to get affordable child care: Pool your resources with several other working moms and hire one babysitter to watch all your children at the same time. Even without the sitter, you can get together with other WAHMs and let the kids play while you all work. "I found that if a child has a playdate, he or she is often amused long enough to allow you to do work that doesn't require extreme quiet," says freelance writer Melissa Dutton, of Columbus, Ohio, who also sometimes swapped child care for her two kids with another working mom a few hours a week. "I knew that she worked from home, too, so I offered to take her kid first, and it grew from there."

At a glance, my life as a woman and work-at-home mother looks like a feminist’s wet dream. I’m college educated with a solid career history filled with escalating job moves and promotions. I’ve had a pretty successful career both as a staff writer and freelancer. I’ve saved thousands on daycare costs (especially when my kids were little). I don’t have to take time off when my kids are home sick. I take conference calls during soccer practices. I still contribute to social security by continuing to work (hope it’s still there when I need it!) There is a bank account with my name on it (not my husband’s). And yes, sometimes, I work in my pajamas.

I've been blogging since 2007, but it wasn't until 2014 that I really started viewing my blog as a business and got serious about making a living blogging. I now make a full-time living with my website, and I feel really fortunate that I'm able to help people find work from home and also make a living doing something I love. None of it would have been … Read More

Thank you a lot for this amazing article. I am from Armenia but now I live in Russia. I have refused from my job to come to Russia and now I would like to gain a little money at home and bring up my son. Is it possible to earn money from Russia? What easy methods of gaining will you suggest me in order I could spend less efforts and time, staying more with my son?
For those without the flexibility, however, the Internet is littered with bullshit articles about high-salary jobs ($75,000+) that you can do from your kitchen. Jobs that while, yes, exist, are not actually an option to the majority of job seekers scanning the online listings. Nobody is hiring you to work from your patio as a $115,000 a year forensic computer analyst, or an $86,000 a year software developer, unless you already have a degree in computer science. It’s difficult to be a $150,000 a year medical writer if you’ve never actually worked in the medical profession, or have any idea what a sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia is (it’s an ice cream headache, by the way). Most of the high-paying remote jobs listed require you already have experience in a particular field and/or are prepared to switch careers, retrain, and/or go back to school for a new degree. That can take years, and while not an impossible feat, one that’s decidedly more difficult with young children.
Who says blogging can’t bring in the bucks? Blogging is an excellent way to make money while you write about topics that truly matter to you. As a blogger for this freelance telecommuting job, you’ll write about a specific industry, such as fashion, in a fun and comedic style. In order to apply for this position, you must have previous blogging experience, as well as a portfolio that includes fashion-related pieces—and a good sense of humor.
Along the lines of writing for the content mill in #21, the difference is that you go must go to online job portals such as freelancer.com, elance.com and such then specifically bid on writing jobs. Many of the jobs are specifically to write articles for websites. There is a huge demand for such content and as long as you are a competent writer (i.e. you speak and write fluent English and your level of writing is good enough where you can actually produce a good article about any topic given), you can make a decent part time living as a freelance article writer. If you build up a list of clients, you can even turn this into a FULL time job as well.

What It Is: Students in countries including Japan, Korea, France and Germany are looking for English speakers to practice with. Sessions focus on things like making professional small talk or running a meeting (trainers are provided with specifics on how to teach each topic, and are also trained themselves for two days before starting the job). Lessons take place either over the phone or on a live Internet video service like Skype—sometimes at night, because you're working with students in different time zones. You need to commit to a minimum of 20 hours a week at consistent times, and can work as many as 35 hours.

In 2016, only 19 percent of men did housework — such as cleaning or doing laundry — compared to 49 percent of women, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Additionally, 68 percent of women did food preparation and/or cleanup compared to 42 percent of men. This doesn’t even include the invisible mental load and emotional labor women are bogged down with daily:  keeping track of doctor appointments, hiring out to fix things in the home, playdate schedules, family vacation planning, etc.
How to Get It: Check out K12 (K12.com) and Connections Academy (ConnectionsAcademy.com). Every WAHM has a similar horror story: She's on an important call, her toddler wants to watch Elmo or is suddenly starving, and her boss is left listening to a whining child and Mom's apologies instead of her bright ideas. Their advice? Hit the mute button during conference calls to avoid any unexpected yells of "Mommmeee!"in the background. If your child is fussing while you're on the phone, end the call and reschedule if you can. That said, you can usually count on a more compassionate response from another parent. When she first went back to work, O'Donnell would hide that she worked from home from her clients. Now she's up-front with them, explaining that her kids might interrupt. She's found that, in general, people are understanding.
Although the demand is expected to decrease over the next decade, the opportunities are still there for travel agents who can harness the Internet to earn clients and help them plan their adventures. According to the BLS, job prospects may be best for travel agents who offer expertise in certain regions of the world, have experience planning tours or adventures, or who focus on group travel.

For Jen and Jon, the “traditional” roles of what a man and wife are supposed to do in marriage presented a challenge early on in the transition to bread-winning wife and stay-at-home husband. “Earlier in this arrangement, every once in a while I would find myself becoming resentful that he got to be with the kids I was ‘stuck’ working,” confesses Jen. “I came from a traditional household, so when I was thrust into the role of breadwinner, and having those financial pressures, it was a lot to deal with.”
Just as with any potential career change, to be most marketable, it is good to focus on your existing skills and strengths. Freelancing in your career field is a good place to start if you are looking for flexible, online work from home. Many companies and organizations outsource work to freelancers because doing so is cost effective and is flexible based on the organization's market and workload. Freelancers who value their stay-at-home status but hope to earn some extra income are a perfect fit that fills this need.

Whoever said money can’t buy friendship has never heard of Rent a Friend! I’m not even kidding. You go to their website and offer your friendship for $10 to $50 per hour. You set your own price and what types of activities you’re available for! The website clearly states that it is NOT a dating site, but a service offering companionship; someone to show you around an unfamiliar town, for example.
Great list! I have been a stay at home Mom for going on 4 years now. It is absolutely a sacrifice, both emotionally and financially to do so. I started looking into ways I could supplement our income, since my husband gets paid monthly. I do before/after school care most days, then during my free time I float between Amazon mturk and Swagbucks. Neither will make you rich quick.
Hi, I am a mother of four, as well as a security/safety officer and a small daycare provider.. I have a background in education (worked for local school for about 10yrs) as well as safety (security officer for about 6yrs and took on safety position as an additive about a year and a half ago.). I would really like to be at home with my kids more and with that being said I am interested in data entry or something similar to that…
At iRelaunch we run Return to Work Conferences all over the country that have been attended by hundreds of people. Typically, five to ten percent of them are men. We have participated in numerous programs sponsored by employers and universities and have seen the same numbers, most recently at Goldman Sachs’ New Directions program held just a few weeks ago. Because we think at-home dads returning to work still face more of a stigma than their female counterparts, networking, a mainstay of the female relauncher’s career reentry strategy, is even more critical. The men must develop relationships with people who know them in a context other than as a caregiver. A personal recommendation is what will be needed to get the at-home dad in the door to the interview spot. Beyond that, we think the career reentry strategies we present are gender neutral and equally effective for men as for women. Click here for more return to work tools and resources.

Secret Shopper. Big companies need real consumers to walk into a store and see how their product is displayed on the shelf. A couple of apps — Rewardable and Gigwalk — enable moms to complete those tasks for a few dollars. Yes, really, set your expectations that it’s just a few dollars, but hey, maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Or maybe you were going to Home Depot anyway, so snapping a picture of the Rustoleum display for $4 is no skin off your back. Expect to get paid via PayPal.
Every SAHD I spoke with told me that when they meet someone for the first time, they’re asked, “Where is the mother?” and “Are you babysitting?” This is a parenting stereotype where it’s automatically assumed that a father would only be with his kids if he was “babysitting.” That, as a male, he wouldn’t be taking a genuine interest in spending quality time with his children unless he’d been directed to. Yes, most kids are watched by women, but this did annoy the dads, as they felt it was demeaning.
Make extra cash renting out your car with Turo! Perfect if you have a second car that’s usually sitting in the garage. Even better… get paid for renting out your car while you’re away on vacation! Your car is covered by their $1,000,000 liability policy during every rental, covering any damage to or theft from your car, with no out-of-pocket expenses. But most people don’t know how to start a freelance career from scratch. Where do you find clients? Do you need a website? How do you file taxes? Working with an agency can be the perfect stepping stone to building your stay-at-home career as a freelancer. Companies like Upwork, Belay, CloudPeeps, and, yes, your pals here at Don’t Panic specialize in connecting virtual workers with businesses who need their services.

Buza: We shed a lot of income by me staying at home, and I wanted to bring something in to help offset that loss. I’d been following the growth of the Indie publishing movement and writing turned out to be the best thing I could do with my newfound time. I really think it’s a great side option for stay-at-home parents in general. I’ve got six titles out (working on my seventh) and am finishing up post-production of my television series. I like to stay active, my mind is like a sponge. For example, I subscribe to nearly 85 podcasts! I’m a junkie for knowledge and learning!

Teaching English online from home is a great way to make some extra money or bring in a full-time income. Currently, three companies that specialize in teaching English to Chinese children online are in the midst of a hiring push. Online teaching is flexible, and the pay is excellent. It's also rewarding to work with children. The three companies … Read More
