So, just because a dad doesn’t go into an office doesn’t mean he isn’t working. Several dads I know have arrangements with their company so they can be on calls before, during, and after their children’s school schedules. Other dads I’ve spoken with engage in virtual work that is project-based so they can work at odd hours that don’t conflict with school schedules. It’s a juggling act, but they make it work.


Tutoring. My friend Jenny tapped into a high-income community and used her teaching background to earn $40/hour helping with homework. The real money came when she bundled three kids together for group homework sessions, charging each family $25/hr. That’s $75 for an hour of work that can be done while your baby naps. Or, while you pay a teenager $10 to watch the baby in another room. The truth is, with women playing an increasingly more important role in today’s workforce, having the mom stay home with the kids is not always the most logical solution for families. It really depends on each person’s earning power, job flexibility and hours. The stay-at-home dad network seems to be filled with everything from former high-powered lawyers who would work more than 90 hours a week to journalists who didn’t earn as much as their wives.

I understand people making these comments aren’t trying to be insulting. Truly, I do. They probably see that I’m a mom who saves money on daycare, can attend dance class in the middle of the day with my kid (laptop in tow), and has freeing flexibility. If you have knowledge about certain subjects, consider sharing it with the world through blogging. You can event start a blog on parenting and tell people how it feels to be a single dad and how they can handle things better. Sharing gorgeous pictures of your babies can add a personal touch to your blog and make it work even better. Just set up a blog and market it on websites such as Pinterest, Craftgawker, or Foodgawker to earn money through it.

You can use your college degree and prior work experience to find a consulting job that you can work at from home.
