I also have the never-ending piles of laundry, the shelves that always need dusting, the dishes that just keep on getting dirty, and so on. Of course, these are things all families deal with, but when you work at home, those things tug at you all day. I’m part of the mess and contributing to it, while at the same time being driven crazy by it. Since work and kids take priority, the house gets put on the back burner — and then sometimes it gets forgotten and boils over and sets off the fire alarm. *sigh*
Hi Keith, Food is tricky because each state has different laws and regulations about commercial cooking in home-based kitchens. So, she’ll first need to research the laws and regulations in your state to see if her business model is possible. Or she could join a direct sales company like Tastefully Simple that sells food products. As for your career, do you want to record music and sell it?
Her other kid-centric tips: Set aside a few cool toys that your kids can play with, or arrange playdates or special movie viewings only during "Mommy's work time." If your children have something to look forward to, they'll be less likely to interrupt you. You can also try setting up an activity center in your home office so kids feel as if they have their own designated place to do projects while you catch up on e-mails. If their interest in that fails, create a "boredom bowl," suggests Durst.
Being a stay-at-home dad can be considered full-time work in and of itself; the key is establishing a routine where you carve yourself out some time during the day to actually get work done. This could mean starting your day before sunrise (before everyone else in the house wakes up), using your child(ren)’s naptime to be productive, or working once your significant other gets home. The keys to making this work are discipline (it can be hard to hunker down and be productive while at home), organization skills (your time becomes limited) and establishing a routine with your partner (they will need to understand that when you’re “off duty” after 6pm, for example, it’s because you might have a deadline to contend with).
Hi Patrick, thanks for the comment. You can start by looking in to some opportunities listed on this post. Then, you may want to set up a professional website for yourself to market your services. If you have experience in a particular field, you can start yourself to potential clients. If you don’t have any experience, you may want to do a few jobs for free to build up enough experience to improve your chances of getting hired. Good luck!
Helping people get approved for the home of their dreams is one of the biggest goals of the mortgage-loan officer. You’ll proactively identify, develop and maintain a quality network of business relationships that serve as a source of referrals for new mortgage-lending opportunities. To snag this remote job, you’ll need a BA/BS or equivalent experience in residential mortgage sales. Documented residential mortgage-loan volume in the past 12 months of $12 million is a minimum, along with being able to establish relationships with local referral networks.
Information technology is the most popular sector when it comes to finding the best work-from-home jobs. Singe dads with knowledge of coding and designing can find many online web designing and development jobs. You may have to create new websites, modify templates, update codes, and give usability reviews. To build websites from the ground up, you should have ample knowledge of CSS, and html. You will also have to write code from scratch. Knowledge about search engine optimization is important because it determines how visible a site will be in search engines, which will have an impact on its success. Many web designers make in excess of #175,000 a year.

But most people don’t know how to start a freelance career from scratch. Where do you find clients? Do you need a website? How do you file taxes? Working with an agency can be the perfect stepping stone to building your stay-at-home career as a freelancer. Companies like Upwork, Belay, CloudPeeps, and, yes, your pals here at Don’t Panic specialize in connecting virtual workers with businesses who need their services.

The messy logistics of having two working parents is one of the biggest reasons many women choose to stay at home in the first place. After all, juggling multiple kids and their schedules can be a job in itself, and that’s especially true when you have more than one or two kids. Having one parent at home means having more flexibility to get the kids to soccer practice or band camp before dinner, all without consuming valuable PTO or making your boss angry.

Another drag of the work-at-home mom daily grind, is social and professional isolation. For an introvert like me, I think, I could care less about interacting with humans face-to-face all day. The less humans, the better. However, I know the corporate dance. I used to do it. There is a certain amount of small talk that goes a long way towards staying in good standing with management and securing one’s future. I also know how humans work — we all feed off of some level of engagement and connection with one another. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t live in communities or ever get lonely.
Who says blogging can’t bring in the bucks? Blogging is an excellent way to make money while you write about topics that truly matter to you. As a blogger for this freelance telecommuting job, you’ll write about a specific industry, such as fashion, in a fun and comedic style. In order to apply for this position, you must have previous blogging experience, as well as a portfolio that includes fashion-related pieces—and a good sense of humor.
Great article, thanks. I’m a Mom of 4, now a hands-on Nanna. Pretty hard to get things done when your kids are small. When my oldest was being bullied at school I desperately needed money to pay for an alternative private school. So I became an ethical dog breeder. Twenty seven years on I’m still doing it and reckon it beats most other options out there hands down.
So, just because a dad doesn’t go into an office doesn’t mean he isn’t working. Several dads I know have arrangements with their company so they can be on calls before, during, and after their children’s school schedules. Other dads I’ve spoken with engage in virtual work that is project-based so they can work at odd hours that don’t conflict with school schedules. It’s a juggling act, but they make it work.

This is a 21st Century opportunity for a naturally organized stay-at-home worker. A virtual assistant helps a professional take care of any number of tasks that can be done from home, such as handling correspondence, bookkeeping and website design. This is a great job in terms of steady income, as virtual assistants often stay with their clients long term, although sometimes it can be less flexible than other stay-at-home work. Virtualassistants.com is a directory for companies and assistants to find each other.
Great list! I have been a stay at home Mom for going on 4 years now. It is absolutely a sacrifice, both emotionally and financially to do so. I started looking into ways I could supplement our income, since my husband gets paid monthly. I do before/after school care most days, then during my free time I float between Amazon mturk and Swagbucks. Neither will make you rich quick.

Buza: Guard nap time like a fortress. When that kid is down, you move into production mode. For me, it’s writing or marketing. The YMCA, which offers childcare to parents, up to two hours a day. I take advantage of this to keep the weight off (SAHDs will gain the daddy 15 in the first year) by working out for about 45 minutes, and then use the rest of the time to write or work on projects. I use the late evening (10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.) to work, and in the end, have about four to five hours spread across the day.

[…] 50+ Legitimate Work From Home Job Opportunities  I have known people who have tried to find jobs they can do in their free time from home and it is really hard to find a work at home job that isn’t a scam.  Alexa from singlemomsincome.com has a list of actual things you can do to earn a little extra money.  The one tip I have is that there is no job called “work from home”  If that is the title of the classified ad then keep moving because that isn’t a real job listing. Teaching English online from home is a great way to make some extra money or bring in a full-time income. Currently, three companies that specialize in teaching English to Chinese children online are in the midst of a hiring push. Online teaching is flexible, and the pay is excellent. It's also rewarding to work with children. The three companies … Read More
This is one of my favorite extra income ideas. Moms can earn a killing writing freelance articles during their spare time. You don't have to be an English expert or have a journalism background either. There are plenty of successful blogs and businesses looking to hire writers to share their personal experiences. Some of these sites will even pay you upfront for your articles which is great if you're looking to make some quick cash.
Download the Gigwalk app and start making money right away in your own neighborhood. I registered for an account and the first gig I received paid $8 to take 20 photos of several different bags of Cheetos sold in a local store. That would’ve probably taken me about 10 minutes to do. I’ve read that some others have gotten gigs taking photos of restaurant menus and street signs. The more gigs you complete, the more “Gigwalk Streetcred” you earn. This helps unlock higher paying jobs, which can pay up to $90!

“Keep your husband involved, and don’t leave him out. It’s so easy to make a personal unit with just you and your kid, especially because you’re the mom and they want you more — especially if they’re a breastfed baby — they only want the mom. You have to remember your husband made her too. You’re still married, he’s still your best friend and partner.”

The FlexJobs database lists thousands of work-at-home jobs that offer stay-at-home moms the ability to work comfortably from a home office. Below we’ve got 10 great work-at-home jobs for stay-at-home moms, along with their median annual salary from PayScale.
After reading this blog I decided to try one of the places – Clickworker – thought it was right up my alley. I assume these are legit online businesses, but unfortunately, as soon as I signed up with all my information – my Facebook account was hacked! I’m concerned as to what else might happen, but hoping that was it and my account at Clickworker was closed fast enough. Just be careful….

I am an ESL teacher for VIPKid and I love it! I can work as much or as little as I like depending on what I have going on each week. The curriculum is already made by the company and the kids are eager to learn. All you need is a bachelor’s degree. Any kind of experience working with kids is great too. It was an answer to my prayers when I found this job last year and I feel so great being able to make money and be at home with my kids.

With so many businesses operating mostly, or even completely, online, it’s no wonder that many hire virtual assistants to help keep them organized and complete administrative tasks. According to the International Virtual Assistants Association, these workers are “independent contractors who (from a remote location, usually their home or office) support multiple clients in a variety of industries by providing administrative, creative, and technical services.”

Meanwhile, Mark and his wife are secure enough in their marriage and feel completely comfortable poking fun at themselves. He relates the story of when a fellow non-traditional couple came over for brunch one weekend. “It was probably funny and ironic enough for a fly on the wall to witness two dads talking about the travails of raising preschoolers while their wives talked about business,” says Mark. “But the real ‘aha’ moment came as they were about to leave. Carol and I both wished Diana well as she navigated the pregnancy and impending birth with her career, and jokingly warned Bill that he was about to have his hands full. ‘Don’t feel sorry for Bill,’ Diana joked, ‘He’s got total job security now.’ With that, she gave him a loving pat on the rear end. It was funny, and we laughed, but I couldn’t help think I’d just witnessed a scene from the 1950’s except in reverse.”
I created my own niche after my divorce last year by learning Google Adwords and now handle my own accounts and do contract work for a local digital marketing agency. I set up accounts and rehab / optimize existing ones. Adwords is a platform built for the small solo operator AND big corporations, so there is a lot within the dashboard to sort & sift through. I basically assist small local service businesses get set up right so they don’t continue to lose money. Plus I offer interactive lessons (not something many people do out there at all). Google Adwords is huge and growing (partly how Google makes its BILLIONS). If you love data analysis, marketing in general, writing on point & creative ad copy, and simply LEARNING, the opportunities are there for TRUE self-starters. You also have to have super attention to detail with spelling, etc. I don’t have a college degree, mind you, but was hungry to learn it all. I am at heart a teacher and helper (and have always been geared towards marketing). I have owned my own little businesses as a house cleaner and professional organizer and then segued into Adwords (after building my own cleaning & organizing campaigns). Did so after I had my 2nd boy in 10/2015 and one in K at the time. I had to find a way to work from home because the chaos of meeting the school bus and dropping off and picking up at the sitter was getting a little crazy. 🙂 I recommend looking into Adwords. You can even get certified. That is my next goal.
You can make money as an affiliate marketer, by promoting products that you love. When you sign up as an affiliate for a company, you’ll receive a commission for each sale you help make happen. Alex is half of the husband-wife team who started a blog called Avocadu and earned more than $100,000 in their first year of blogging. Within three years, they were making more than $100,000 per month!

In other words, I had no friggin’ clue of the reality of how hard it is to make a living as a writer. But the MBA sales and marketing skills, and I suppose some writing talent, along with a relentless desire to be successful, accelerated my new career. Now I’m earning in the top 5% of writers. Sounds impressive, right? Well, I’m comparing myself to other writers. I still make way less than I did as a marketing executive.
This is a great list! Some of these I have never thought of for the stay at home moms (and stay at home dads 😉 ) out there. I have done a lot of research on different ways to make some income and I am always amazed at the ideas I still routinely find. You mentioned working for Amazon. I know Amazon has a platform that offers some micro jobs you can do as well. They pay small amounts but if you do a lot they can add up! I also like Uber! But only for driving during the day. I wouldn’t suggest driving for Uber at night.
Identity – At-home dads struggle with their identity as men. Society still believes that childcare and household chores are “a woman’s work” so at-home dads often can feel unsure of their manliness. This is further complicated by friends, family and even their own spouses not supporting their decision to be at-home dads. For some at-home dads, this identity struggle is too great and the family suffers from a man who becomes depressed and frustrated about his perceived failings to “be a man” or he returns to work. Fortunately, most at-home dads come to enjoy their unique role and get comfortable changing diapers and folding laundry instead of “bringing home the bacon.” These at-home dads are redefining the very definition of masculinity.

Another way to get affordable child care: Pool your resources with several other working moms and hire one babysitter to watch all your children at the same time. Even without the sitter, you can get together with other WAHMs and let the kids play while you all work. "I found that if a child has a playdate, he or she is often amused long enough to allow you to do work that doesn't require extreme quiet," says freelance writer Melissa Dutton, of Columbus, Ohio, who also sometimes swapped child care for her two kids with another working mom a few hours a week. "I knew that she worked from home, too, so I offered to take her kid first, and it grew from there."

So many times I took the kid to the park and participated in meetings and ad hoc meetings while pushing the kiddo on the swing. Additionally, iPhones have a great dictation option when composing texts or emails; I found it easier to dictate emails and texts. It worked great and it allowed me to stay connected with the office. It’s really hard typing on the small screen and trying to watch the kid!
There are some good jobs on this list, but I just want to warn others that some of the gigs on this list are very low paying. Some Fiverr sellers do very well, but the majority of gigs don’t earn more than $50 a month. Also, keep in mind that if you are writing 1,000 word articles for $25 each for bidding site clients, you will burn out because you’d have to write a ton of those to equal the wages you’d make at a minimum wage job.

Rawlinson: When we found out we were having twins, I looked everywhere for a book and information for fathers of twins. Unfortunately, almost everything I found was written by moms and for moms. I realized that if I wanted information about parenting twins from a father’s perspective, surely there were other dads like me, too. After we came out of the sleep-deprived first months with twins, I started to blog at DadsGuideToTwins.com and that eventually turned into my two books.

That said, there’s good news: If you’re searching for a work-from-home job because you’re looking for the kind of flexibility you can’t get being tied to a desk for nine hours a day, you’re absolutely in luck. Working remotely, assuming your employer is okay with projects being done on your timeline, can be a godsend for parents. The arrangement allows you to work around daycare and preschool schedules, take kids to doctors appointments and soccer practice, and rarely if ever stress when they wake up with a fever and you need to stay home. Working from home can make life, especially if both parents are employed full time, infinitely easier.
Jen notes that she is aware of the warning advice for breadwinning wives that the switch-up can lead to the path of divorce. “The man [feels] not needed as much or the woman feels too much pressure from every angle,” explains Jen. “It may be true, but I also think you both have to have the mindset of, ‘OK, this is what we are going to do. If it doesn’t work out, we’ll change it, but regardless, we’ll work it out together.’ ”
I’m sure you’ve heard of or even purchased items from Etsy, the most well-known website for buying and selling homemade items. If you are crafty and can create products that people would be interested in buying, this can be a very lucrative work from home opportunity. The categories of items that are the most popular include: home decor, jewelry, clothing, toys, craft supplies, and kids/babies.

One of the most significant social trends in the last 20 years has been the rise in the number of SAHDs. In the United States, this number has reached 1.9 million and accounts for 16% of the stay-at-home parent population, according to 2015 U.S. Census data. Our culture continues to shift away from the rigid gender roles of past generations, which is made evident by women expecting more involvement from dads — and dads stepping up to the challenge by willingly taking on the primary nurturing role in their children’s life.
It’s fairly easy to build your own website if you take advantage of the many free learning opportunities online. However, much of the population isn’t equipped to build their own site, or doesn’t have the time, which is why so many people make a living building websites and blogs for others. According to the BLS, around 16% of web developers were self-employed in 2016, with the vast majority able to work at home, or anywhere with a laptop and speedy Internet connection.
Finally, when looking around for the right personal finance software that meets your needs, make sure that you’re comfortable with the program’s interface. It shouldn’t be expected that you recognize every single feature instantly, but if the features don’t seem readable and manageable to you, then you’re not as likely to use it and get the full benefits.

"The idea of having her commute to our home office to do customer service didn't make sense," Akerson said. "It was sort of accidental that we hired a parent. It was a blessing to both of us that it was part-time though. Since the company was just starting out, we didn’t have the revenue to justify much in payroll yet, and as a mother of three, she did not want full-time work."

You don’t just want any ol’ customer-service job. No, you want to be a smashing success. In this fast-paced position, you’ll be the point of contact to answer merchant questions. You should be able to determine the best plan and proactively identify growth opportunities that will help the merchant’s business skyrocket. The ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial flair, two-plus years of customer-service experience, and an inquiring mind to find solutions for specific issues.
It’s not all bad, of course. I never have to miss anything my kids are a part of, and I do get to enjoy a lot of time with my little people. I have been forced to learn to compartmentalize my time and set clear boundaries, which is a good thing. I have had to learn not to feel guilty for working in front of my kids, though admittedly I still struggle with that sometimes. My husband more than pulls his own weight, so overall, the benefits outweigh the challenges.

Jennifer and Steve made the decision a couple of years ago that Jenn would work as a professional for a local company and Steve would be the full-time, caregiving stay-at-home dad. But while Steve loves this opportunity to raise their two young children, he misses a little of the independence he had before the children came. Steve has been checking online for jobs that he could do from home to earn a little extra money but finds himself confused by many of the at-home opportunities for the additional income.

“One identified family-related disadvantage that may result from home is that the telecommuter may be expected to shoulder greater household responsibility because that person is ‘home all day,’ a 2015 study in the Association for Psychological Science (APS) found. “Thus, telecommuting on the part of women may reinforce gendered divisions of labor.”
At-home dads have a lot in common with at-home moms, but they are not moms. Men have different interests and styles of communication. Men parent differently. There is something that men gain from fellowship with other men that would be difficult to find in a mom’s group. In previous roles, an at-home dad found male friends through work or school. But at-home dads are typically much more isolated as noted above. The National At-Home Dad Network, our local at-home dad groups, annual convention and discussion forums offer a place for them to connect with new friends who are in the same situation.
You already spend way too much time pinning on Pinterest and posting fabulous pics on Instagram. Now get paid for your social-media savvy! The social-media evaluator will need to improve the relevancy of the newsfeed for a leading global social-media client. You’ll need to commit to working one to four flexible hours a day, five days per week. For some projects, at least one day must be a weekend day. Doing outstanding work will make you eligible for additional social-media projects. To qualify, you’ll have to perform online daily social-media use (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.), have strong communication skills and a high-speed Internet connection.
Skills Required: You’ll need to be able to find and transport your bargains back to your home base. You need the tools and knowledge to be able to fix them up and improve them. You’ll also need a way to sell them, so you don’t let your inventory take over your home. Make sure you have a way to take decent photographs, so people can see what they’re buying.
How to Get It: Begin with sites like UserTesting.com, YouEye.com and Userlytics.com. Register with multiple companies for opportunities to test as many websites as possible. Once you're in the system, you'll be emailed when testers are needed, and if you're one of the first to respond, expect to spend 15 to 20 minutes completing the test. Many sites require a microphone and/or webcam, which are built into most laptops—but if you need to buy one, they aren't expensive. The tester sites typically pay within a week or two via PayPal.
Another tactic to adopt when you're in business mode? Dress the part. Aimee Samuelson, a Portland, Oregon, mom of two, who runs a marketing business out of a converted garage, dresses as if she's going into an office when she's on the job. She knows if she works in her pj's she won't concentrate as well and might get distracted by household tasks between conference calls. Not everyone needs a suit on to feel more professional -- sometimes taking a shower and putting on makeup and a clean outfit will do the trick.

With advances in technology and with corporate attitudes being more acceptive of telecommuting, there are more work-at-home positions than ever before! In fact, according to FlexJob’s annual analysis of the top companies that hire remote workers, there was a 52 percent increase in the number of telecommuting jobs from 2015 to 2016 — that's up 11 percent from the year before!

Other stay-at-home dads sell products that they make or purchase. Dads who are great photographers can sell their pictures online. Other dads get their kids or partners involved and sell creative crafts on the Web. Other get into online auction sites like eBay and buy and sell items. Even other dads buy used computers and laptops, refurbish them in the spare bedroom and then sell them online. One thing to remember is that in most states, people who sell at retail, even if they sell online, have to secure a business license and a state tax account and collect sales taxes in certain circumstances.

Do you love being around dogs but can’t commit to having one of your own? There is a big demand for dog walking for people who work long hours away from the home as well as dog sitting for when dog owners go out of town. This would give you and your kids the perfect opportunity to have fun with a four-legged friend without having to adopt one of your own.
The work-at-home mom revolution was born out of moms and families looking to find solutions to the ever-growing demands of modern parenting, while keeping a professional identity. The positive was you get paid, the challenge was not frequently and sometimes needed to wait a month for payment to be transferred to the paypal account. Then I became and infant massage teacher and love this. Buza: The biggest problem with SAHDs is the isolation. The stay-at-home world is geared for women. All the kids’ groups are run by women. The Facebook groups are dominated by women. When I go to the park I’m treated like a shark swimming in a shallow pool. It’s REALLY hard to find other dads in the area. It’s very isolating…which is the number one complaint SAHDs have.

Whoever said that staying at home to look after children and the home was easy? Handling school obligations and social schedules on top of the domestic responsibilities of managing a household is a workload that is never done, and I don’t know anyone who has successfully balanced both. Anyone who believes that SAHDs are lazy must never have been in in a stay-at-home position themselves.

If her kids ever felt like they had nothing to do, she'd tell them to choose a slip of paper from the dish. Some instructed them to build the tallest Lego tower, others told them to clean their room. When they got older, she'd include them in her work by asking them to put away files. "You need to have an open-door policy and involve them in any capacity they can handle," she says.
