I understand people making these comments aren’t trying to be insulting. Truly, I do. They probably see that I’m a mom who saves money on daycare, can attend dance class in the middle of the day with my kid (laptop in tow), and has freeing flexibility. HASHTAG #FAMILYGOALS #HAVINGITALL (Side note: I hate the phrase “having it all” because no one has it all and no one ever will).

What I loved most about interviewing these couples is that they took everything about their “nontraditional” marriages and completely owned it. While I’m over here analyzing every square inch of my marriage and wondering if my husband secretly hates me because all I can cook is lasagna and the occasional Crock-Pot meal, these couples are just like, this is what works for us and who cares what anyone else thinks?

When my oldest was being bullied at school I was a single Mom and desperately needed money to pay for an alternative private school. So I became an ethical dog breeder. Twenty seven years on I’m still doing it and reckon it beats most other options out there hands down.

Switching places also forced Jon to reevaluate how he felt about the couple’s marital roles. “For Jon, suddenly his role was changed as well and he dealt with a lot of his own pressures, like the thoughts, “I should be the one working, I should be the one making the money, I should be gone all day,’” says Jen. “It was a change for both of us. Both good and bad. Even though it is what we both wanted, it comes with its share of challenges.”

Another drag of the work-at-home mom daily grind, is social and professional isolation. For an introvert like me, I think, I could care less about interacting with humans face-to-face all day. The less humans, the better. However, I know the corporate dance. I used to do it. There is a certain amount of small talk that goes a long way towards staying in good standing with management and securing one’s future. I also know how humans work — we all feed off of some level of engagement and connection with one another. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t live in communities or ever get lonely. 
Mark Egerman of Brooklyn, New York, recently started his second stint as a stay-at-home dad. When the 35-year-old's first child was born in 2015, it coincided with the sale of his restaurant payment app company. As CEO, he planned to take off three to six months to help care for his newborn. But once his company sold, he was in a position to take an indefinite leave.
Rawlinson: I thought there would be a clear barrier between work and interactions with my family. While the kids respected my work time in the beginning, now the interruptions are more frequent. For Jen and Jon, the “traditional” roles of what a man and wife are supposed to do in marriage presented a challenge early on in the transition to bread-winning wife and stay-at-home husband. “Earlier in this arrangement, every once in a while I would find myself becoming resentful that he got to be with the kids I was ‘stuck’ working,” confesses Jen. “I came from a traditional household, so when I was thrust into the role of breadwinner, and having those financial pressures, it was a lot to deal with.”

Being a stay-at-home-dad doesn’t mean you need to put your career on the sidelines entirely. There are many skills or careers that are conducive to working from home: everything from social media management, editing and writing, to graphic design and even accounting, can lead to lucrative contract work. A quick search on Monster.ca’s career section can turn up results in the freelance world!
Jen notes that she is aware of the warning advice for breadwinning wives that the switch-up can lead to the path of divorce. “The man [feels] not needed as much or the woman feels too much pressure from every angle,” explains Jen. “It may be true, but I also think you both have to have the mindset of, ‘OK, this is what we are going to do. If it doesn’t work out, we’ll change it, but regardless, we’ll work it out together.’ ”

Now, back to the bad news. The best way to get a full-time, work-from-home job is to already be employed a company, or in an industry, where people telecommute or work remotely. If you’re an editor or a graphic designer at a magazine, it’s decidedly easier to go freelance or find a publication that doesn’t require you to be in the office than if you’re a bank teller. Same is true of sales jobs, a lot of which can be done at home or in a coffee shop as long as you have a phone and an internet connection. The absolute best way for a parent to get a work-from-home job, assuming they’re in a field that affords the flexibility, is to talk to your employer and work out an arrangement. It’s a simple as that. The boss may say no, but it never hurts to ask.

Soon after the column appeared I got a call from the Boston ABC TV affiliate WCVB TV “The Boston Channel.”  They wanted to get a local angle on dads returning to work. One at-home dad, David Hubbard from Stow, MA had a particularly interesting story because his experience disclosing his at-home dad status on his resume yielded positive reactions instead of the negative results reported by the other dads. Dave is back at work at in the same position at the same company he left before he began his career break in 2004. He’s Director of Government Contracts for DSD Laboratories. Following is his “Relaunch Success Story"

With advances in technology and with corporate attitudes being more acceptive of telecommuting, there are more work-at-home positions than ever before! In fact, according to FlexJob’s annual analysis of the top companies that hire remote workers, there was a 52 percent increase in the number of telecommuting jobs from 2015 to 2016 — that's up 11 percent from the year before!
Meanwhile, Mark and his wife are secure enough in their marriage and feel completely comfortable poking fun at themselves. He relates the story of when a fellow non-traditional couple came over for brunch one weekend. “It was probably funny and ironic enough for a fly on the wall to witness two dads talking about the travails of raising preschoolers while their wives talked about business,” says Mark. “But the real ‘aha’ moment came as they were about to leave. Carol and I both wished Diana well as she navigated the pregnancy and impending birth with her career, and jokingly warned Bill that he was about to have his hands full. ‘Don’t feel sorry for Bill,’ Diana joked, ‘He’s got total job security now.’ With that, she gave him a loving pat on the rear end. It was funny, and we laughed, but I couldn’t help think I’d just witnessed a scene from the 1950’s except in reverse.”

Laura recounts how, in going out with her girlfriends, many of whom were stay-at-home moms, she was in the unique position to hear the gripes of wives talking about their husbands not coming home at night on time — and realize that their complaints were the same as her own husband’s. “Since I was friends with SAHMs, I listened and learned a lot about their frustrations which turned out to be about the same as Ron’s,” she remembers.
It’s fairly easy to build your own website if you take advantage of the many free learning opportunities online. However, much of the population isn’t equipped to build their own site, or doesn’t have the time, which is why so many people make a living building websites and blogs for others. According to the BLS, around 16% of web developers were self-employed in 2016, with the vast majority able to work at home, or anywhere with a laptop and speedy Internet connection.
It used to be the recent college grads would pack a bag shortly after graduation and go abroad to teach English. The pay wasn’t much, but the international experience was well worth the low wages. Thanks to high-speed internet and countries packed with both kids and upwardly mobile business executives eager to learn English, now you can teach it without leaving the comfort of your living room. And while many of the listings would prefer teaching experience and/or a TOESL (Teaching of English as a Second Language) certification, it’s often not required. Most positions are part-time with flexible schedules based on what time zone the students are in (classes generally don’t run longer than 60 minutes), allow you to take on as much work as you’d like, and pay upwards of $25 an hour.
Most work-at-home moms don't start out with a full-time telecommuting position right away. The work-at-home lifestyle is usually something you build over time. In fact, you may need to build up your savings first. Plan to start small. If you're moving from the office to telecommuting, maybe try just a couple days a week at first to see how it works for you and your employer. If you're building a business, that takes time. 

Mark Bildner, who serves as host this day, is a veteran of the local D.C. Metro dads' network. He's raising four kids; the eldest is 10. Bildner says he finds that men often have trouble breaking out of the work mindset and getting into the world of parenting. At work, he explains, projects tend to be linear — the goal is to finish one task and move forward to the next, then hit the next goal, the next milestone.
Renee Belbeck, a WAHM from Columbus, Ohio, and C.E.O. and founder of the National Association of W.O.M.E.N. (Women, Owners, Moms, Entrepreneurs, and Networkers), discovered a simple rule when her children were toddlers: "If I gave them a little quality time, I'd get two hours to work." She says the rule still holds true, even though her children are now 10 and 6.
Just because a dad chooses to stay at home doesn’t mean he isn’t earning an income. Technology and the internet mean that working in traditional offices is no longer an absolute, or even the norm. According to Global Workplace Analytics, work-from-home positions among non-self-employed workers have grown by 115% since 2005, which is nearly 10 times faster than the rest of the workforce. Additionally, the digital population engaged in virtual, remote employment, telecommuting and flextime has grown immensely, with 45% of U.S. employees working from home, according to a 2015 report by New Jersey Institute of Technology.
