Let me start by saying there is nothing wrong with sending your children to day care. But we didn’t want to be forced into doing that for our children, especially as early as 12 weeks old. While we are strongly considering some form of day care to socialize our child later in life, we want to raise our son at home for at least the first two years of his life. We just had to figure out how to make a stay-at-home parent work for us financially.
At-home dads have a lot in common with at-home moms, but they are not moms. Men have different interests and styles of communication. Men parent differently. There is something that men gain from fellowship with other men that would be difficult to find in a mom’s group. In previous roles, an at-home dad found male friends through work or school. But at-home dads are typically much more isolated as noted above. The National At-Home Dad Network, our local at-home dad groups, annual convention and discussion forums offer a place for them to connect with new friends who are in the same situation.
If you have knowledge about certain subjects, consider sharing it with the world through blogging. You can event start a blog on parenting and tell people how it feels to be a single dad and how they can handle things better. Sharing gorgeous pictures of your babies can add a personal touch to your blog and make it work even better. Just set up a blog and market it on websites such as Pinterest, Craftgawker, or Foodgawker to earn money through it.

Yes! I’m a stay-at-home mom and started working as a consultant for Usborne Books in January — loving it! I do parties with friends online literally while putting my son to bed, and I did an amazing reading incentive program in my daughter’s school which involved one brief meeting a friend watched my kids during and all the rest was done after they were in bed. Perfect for me right now! usbornebookstores.com

Do you already have a job that you LOVE? Then bring it home by submitting a telecommuting, flextime, or job sharing proposal (and don't assume your employer will say no until you’ve asked). Start by checking your company’s telecommuting policy, if there's nothing in the manual, do your research, and write up a flex time or work-at-home proposal. Be sure to include all of the benefits to the company – including the cost to recruit and hire a new employee to replace you if you decide to quit.

In 2016, only 19 percent of men did housework — such as cleaning or doing laundry — compared to 49 percent of women, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Additionally, 68 percent of women did food preparation and/or cleanup compared to 42 percent of men. Sorry, guys. But if you’re searching for a work-from-home job because you’re a parent and have grand visions of diligently cranking through your workday sitting in a comfortable home office while your toddler peacefully plays with blocks beside your desk, then you’re delusional. That’s a highly romanticized notion. Balancing even a part-time work-from-home job and the responsibilities of parenting is tricky. There are still bosses, meetings, and work that needs to be turned in. And instead of focusing exclusively on doing that work, you must squeeze it in between naps, washing bottles, or picking your child up for daycare. It can be incredibly stressful and you often end up working more hours than you would if you had just dragged yourself into an office.
When Deeanne Akerson launched Kindred Bravely, the maternity and breastfeeding apparel line, she was a stay-at-home mother of two small children working out of her guest bedroom and running a business on her own. A year into running the start-up she needed to hire her first employee, a part-time customer service representative. Her hire was a mother of three who wanted to work flexible hours to take care of her family.
Most work-at-home moms don't start out with a full-time telecommuting position right away. The work-at-home lifestyle is usually something you build over time. In fact, you may need to build up your savings first. Plan to start small. If you're moving from the office to telecommuting, maybe try just a couple days a week at first to see how it works for you and your employer. If you're building a business, that takes time.
