Since naptime is when many moms are tempted to cram in everything on their to-do list -- dishwashing, playdate schedules, laundry -- try to stay focused. "If you were working outside the home, you wouldn't be concerned with anything but work," says Durst. Concentrate only on the things you can't do when your child is awake. Aside from naptime, if you're a morning person, use the wee hours to get stuff done before the rest of the family wakes up. A night owl? Burn the midnight oil.

Be honest. When you think of work-from-home jobs, what comes to mind? Data entry? Customer service? While it’s true that some jobs just scream “work from home,” you might be amazed by the number of industries that offer flex-friendly positions. Although there are work-from-home jobs in practically every industry, the top fields for flexible jobs are medical and health, HR and recruiting, computer and IT, and education and training, as well as accounting and finance, government, and travel and hospitality.
I did work for a while, and then I got married, but when our first baby came along, we couldn’t really afford for me not to work at all. So I started a small editing business from home, which allowed me to bring in a little cash and keep up my professional skills. After a while, I wanted more regular work, so I started doing online tutoring. I set my hours around my husband’s schedule, and it all worked well.
Work from home jobs are more popular than ever.  When you make the important family decision to stay at home with the kids, there are plenty of things you have to consider before you make the leap.  Being a stay at home mom or dad takes serious planning if you want to get it right.  As a stay at home parent, you have to make sure your family makes enough money to live on, plus put money into savings and still have enough for vacations, college, and anything else that’s important to you.

Working from home means literally doing my work in my home. There’s no physical separation between my personal and professional life, no clearly set times when I’m “on” and “off” one or the other. I love being able to make my own schedule, but that flexibility is also my downfall. If I’m not strictly disciplined with my time, which is not exactly my strong suit, it’s too easy to blur the lines between work and home. I tend to work in spurts here and there throughout the day and evening, which makes it feel like I’m working all day, even though I only work part-time hours.
Another way to get affordable child care: Pool your resources with several other working moms and hire one babysitter to watch all your children at the same time. Even without the sitter, you can get together with other WAHMs and let the kids play while you all work. "I found that if a child has a playdate, he or she is often amused long enough to allow you to do work that doesn't require extreme quiet," says freelance writer Melissa Dutton, of Columbus, Ohio, who also sometimes swapped child care for her two kids with another working mom a few hours a week. "I knew that she worked from home, too, so I offered to take her kid first, and it grew from there."

“He cooks, cleans, goes grocery shopping, does yard work, fixes things, maintains the cars and just about everything,” says Laura of her man. “I pay bills since we do online bill-pay now, but when we use to mail checks, he took care of that too. I feel pretty lucky, because since he took care of everything, it gave me more time when I wasn’t at work to spend with the kids or do other activities with friends.”
I AM A QUALIFIED PRIMARY TEACHER AND NEEDED SOMETHING TO TAKE MY HOURS OF WORK DOWN AS I FIND TERM TIME HOURS AND DEMANDS QUITE CHALLENGING. I LOOKED AT SEVERAL DIRECT SELLING OPPORTUNITIES AND FOUND ONE THAT IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. I EARN AS MUCH AS I CHOOSE TO PUT IN THE WORK FOR, AND THERE IS A FANTASTIC SUPPORT NETWORK. IT WAS SOMETHING I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER DO AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
If you’re tempted to describe an overweight, bald, lazy man who sits around drinking beer and watching sports all day, you’re sadly not alone. Similar to the belief that stay-at-home moms sit around watching soap operas and eating bonbons, SAHDs are plagued by misconceptions. It’s unfortunate that the world we live in still discounts and undermines the value of domestic work and family.
Hi Patrick, thanks for the comment. You can start by looking in to some opportunities listed on this post. Then, you may want to set up a professional website for yourself to market your services. If you have experience in a particular field, you can start yourself to potential clients. If you don’t have any experience, you may want to do a few jobs for free to build up enough experience to improve your chances of getting hired. Good luck!
Personal finance software can go a long way in helping you to take control of your money and meeting your financial goals. It’s important to note, however, that some focus more on budgeting and expense tracking while others prioritize investing portfolios and income taxes. Explore several different programs and read reviews to find the one that’s right for you.
If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of labeling your own merchandise, you can also work as a more traditional Amazon FBA seller. You can find more information about that opportunity here. The Selling Family is another husband-wife team who have struck gold online. (You don't have to get your wife involved in these opportunities, though she might enjoy the work-at-home life as well!)

Most work-at-home moms don't start out with a full-time telecommuting position right away. The work-at-home lifestyle is usually something you build over time. In fact, you may need to build up your savings first. Plan to start small. If you're moving from the office to telecommuting, maybe try just a couple days a week at first to see how it works for you and your employer. If you're building a business, that takes time.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, approximately 21% of employees work from home on an average day. I’m sure a significant proportion of these people are mothers who are taking care of their children simultaneously. It can be hard to juggle so many responsibilities, but the key to making it work is finding a job with the perfect fit – one that has built-in flexibility, reasonable compensation and engages all of your greatest strengths.
Hi Emma, Sorry to hear about your job loss and we hope things are going better for you. The jobs and resources in this post have been researched and they are legitimate. My advice to you would be to determine what marketable skills you have that could help you earn an income from an online job. Can you type well? Are you a skilled writer or editor? Do you have amazing organizational skills? Are you good at problem solving? If you are still in need of a job you should look into customer service rep positions or maybe even look into direct sales if you are a people person. Good luck!
