I created my own niche after my divorce last year by learning Google Adwords and now handle my own accounts and do contract work for a local digital marketing agency. I set up accounts and rehab / optimize existing ones. Adwords is a platform built for the small solo operator AND big corporations, so there is a lot within the dashboard to sort & sift through. I basically assist small local service businesses get set up right so they don’t continue to lose money. Plus I offer interactive lessons (not something many people do out there at all). Google Adwords is huge and growing (partly how Google makes its BILLIONS). If you love data analysis, marketing in general, writing on point & creative ad copy, and simply LEARNING, the opportunities are there for TRUE self-starters. You also have to have super attention to detail with spelling, etc. I don’t have a college degree, mind you, but was hungry to learn it all. I am at heart a teacher and helper (and have always been geared towards marketing). I have owned my own little businesses as a house cleaner and professional organizer and then segued into Adwords (after building my own cleaning & organizing campaigns). Did so after I had my 2nd boy in 10/2015 and one in K at the time. I had to find a way to work from home because the chaos of meeting the school bus and dropping off and picking up at the sitter was getting a little crazy. 🙂 I recommend looking into Adwords. You can even get certified. That is my next goal.
I’m trying to build my business, so I can stay at home. So currently I am working a more-than-full-time job out of the house, and working my Jamberry business in any free time I have! I’ve never liked selling things, but I fell in love with Jamberry’s product, so I knew even if I only bought for myself and family id come out on top. I feel safe having them on my nails, as they’re non-toxic! – Andrea Stewart at Jamberry Nails
That time period was, I think, tough on my marriage. I was counting the hours til my husband got home so I would have a break from care taking; if he was ten minutes late on a tough day I'd feel like I couldn't cope another minute. I was also getting my sleep interrupted at night for breast feeding, and that sleep deprivation added up over a period of months, especially when you don't get to "nap when the baby naps" during the day because you are working. And I was pretty isolated compared to the person I had been before the baby; I just needed more human contact than my baby, my husband, and the odd baby yoga class here and there, but there wasn't time or opportunity. With the benefit of hindsight, I honestly wonder how I ever did this. I did not realize at the time, because my judgment was impaired from sleep deprivation I think, how totally and completely nutty it was to keep this up for eight months. How the fuck did I do that?
This business is well-suited for young, business-minded professionals. People in the 18-35 age range tend to be quite savvy with social media, which means they will have a huge advantage when crafting a social media marketing campaign. There’s more involved in this industry than being good at social media, though. People with marketing backgrounds will do exceptionally well in this type of business. The social aspect of this business will allow you to work anywhere you can access your clients’ social media accounts.
Teaching a language generally requires a person to be fluent in that language. However, a language lover who is still learning might consider teaming up with others who are fluent in order to start this business. Definitely, one must possess a real passion for world culture, and an interest in sharing that appreciation with his or her students. This is what makes the challenges of language-learning worthwhile.
I was a virtual assistant for awhile. I was in Real Estate but decided it wasn’t for me because I was out and never home. I decided to start a Real Estate Virtual Assistant business and let all my Real Estate friends know about it. I was hired by a property manager and did all the work at home and got some work from other agents but then they started getting greedy and tried to lower my prices or get free work from me. I was making $15 an hour from the property manager (I was only inputting receipts and I’d update the MLS listings or put in new listings for her and answer calls for her) but then she decided she wanted to pay me $30 per month to do what I was doing plus show the rentals to prospective tenants (showings could last up to an hour per person..sometimes she got non stop calls about some houses)and deposit all the rental money (that takes hours because there were several different banks she’d have to go to)….I said No way and decided that business wasn’t for me. It’s not really hard to get into but be tough and stick to your prices and don’t get your business from friends (like I did) because then they expect you to give them a break.
A lot of car owners simply don’t have time to personally care for their vehicles, much less make them sparkle. With simple equipment such as car shampoo, polishing wax, tire black, sponges, a pail and a sturdy hose, you can start earning a decent side income by making cars look fresh in your free time after work and on weekends. Not bad for an easy business idea that'll keep you outdoors and moving your body on the weekends.
Web design combines the technical know-how of creating a functioning website with the creative requirements of making that site look good and draw in visitors. With the tools available today, almost anyone can create a template-based website, but it takes that special something to make it successful. If you want to challenge yourself in a fairly competitive industry, this might just be the business for you.
My big take away from everyone’s input is that your view of a “normal” workday has to change for this lifestyle. You wake up early to get a few hours in before your husband leaves for work, you work during naps, and you work in 20-45 minute increments when you can entertain your kids. Sometimes, you run your errands in the afternoon to free up your evening time after the kids go to bed for a few solid hours of work. Working from home won’t mean your kids can suddenly entertain themselves for hours, and mostly you won’t want that anyway. Part of being home is the benefit of seeing them, right?
Last summer, furniture manufacturer Herman Miller told Working Mother that about 17 percent of its 57 open jobs were designated for full-time remote workers. The positions included talent recruiter, workplace-knowledge consultant, helpdesk technician and sales-operations manager. But Ann Noe, the company’s inclusiveness and corporate diversity senior program manager, says these jobs aren’t labeled as “remote” in the listings. So how can you tell if a job you’re interested in can be done remotely?
I won't lie--I wouldn't trade those first few years with my daughter for anything. But this sort of arrangement isn't something that you should rely on. Take as much maternity leave as you can, and, after the first bit, try to spend a few hours a day doing something mentally taxing while you have the baby. Go read Dostoyevsky, or bug check some code, or something in your field(ish). You'll figure out pretty quickly if baby + work is a thing you can do. Even if it is, I strongly suggest having a backup babysitter in the wings--someone, anyone, who can step in if Easy Baby is suddenly Teething And Miserable Baby, or Colic Baby, or any number of other things that can turn easy babies into screaming terrors and difficult-but-doable situations into major disasters.
If you are a creative mom and have photography skills, you can start a photography service business. Photography isn’t easy, but it is something where you can choose your own schedule. You won’t need to have your own studio as most photography services these days are done outdoors. This is a wonderful side hustle where you can earn and enjoy at the same time.

Many people’s interest in music goes beyond just listening to it. A lot of people who enjoy listening to it are also interested in learning how to play an instrument. A music lessons business gives novice musicians a way to learn to play an instrument, and it provides more seasoned musicians with advanced training to help them improve their musical abilities. A business may offer private or group lessons in home or classroom settings.
It sounds obvious, but I've definitely been in the situation in which I'm deep "in the zone" and my kids are craving my attention. I've found that when I dedicate a set period of time to them, whether it's reading, drawing, walking the dog together or just having a chat, they're then cool with amusing themselves when I go back to work for an hour or so.

This remote job requires answering incoming calls from customers and giving them assistance with booking or buying the products. The skills in customer service would help greatly. The job is often related to traveling industry and booking tickets or cruises. Headphones with a microphone and fast internet are necessary for a job. A candidate should have great speaking skills. If you are interested in a position, make sure that you have a quiet place to take calls and they will not be interrupted by noise.
If you’re expecting a baby, or in the midst of a childcare arrangement that’s not working out for you, consider if the work-from-home model might help alleviate some of the time and money burdens you’re facing. Finding remote work isn’t impossible and, if you can reduce your expenses and live on less, you can afford to take a lower paying job with fewer hours. That’s the beautiful circle of frugality: the less you spend, the more you save, and the less you need to earn.
Tip #13: Be fully present in your current activity. That means that if you’re home and spending time with your family/kids you’re doing that 100%. It’s so so easy to sneak in work here and there when you’re remote and work from home. It can be so hard to separate the two so I find myself being really conscious of this. When I’m playing with my daughter, I’m fully present (physically and emotionally) doing just that – trying not to think about work etc.
Great stuff. Much of our remote culture (we are 20ppl today) came from the inspiration we got from reading your stories. We have a fully remote and distributed team and deal with the same types of challenges. In the beginning it wasn’t natural to have our kids show up in the screen. It felt wrong and unprofessional. As time goes by, we learn to relax into the uniqueness of this experience and enjoy it fully. Thanks for inspiring us on the way. Luís @ skore.io
When Deeanne Akerson launched Kindred Bravely, the maternity and breastfeeding apparel line, she was a stay-at-home mother of two small children working out of her guest bedroom and running a business on her own. A year into running the start-up she needed to hire her first employee, a part-time customer service representative. Her hire was a mother of three who wanted to work flexible hours to take care of her family.
We chose this schedule because I wanted to quit my 9-to-5 and be the primary caregiver. While this might, at first blush, appear to conform to traditional gender roles, I assure you nothing about our relationship is conservative or regressive. Mr. FW and I are both feminists committed to an egalitarian partnership and it was my express desire to transition into this role.
DEAR HARRIETTE: Whenever I baby-sit for this family, the mom works from home. I understand that she can’t cater to her children and work at the same time, but it makes me uncomfortable. It's strange: I will be in the kitchen making the kids lunch, she will be in there making herself lunch, and then we will all sit together. Or the kids and I will be playing, and she will come and watch for 20 minutes. I know it shouldn’t bother me, but it does. When the kids have a problem, they will ask her instead of me, even though she is doing work and doesn’t want to be distracted. It’s just hard that she’s home when I’m there. Is it weird that I get irritated by this? -- Annoyed Baby Sitter, Reston, Virginia
People who love dogs and other people may be well-suited for owning a dog training business, as the work involves interacting with both dogs and their owners. Patience is another valuable attribute, because training dogs often requires repeating the same drill multiple times. Dog training businesses usually operate during the day, which can make it difficult to run a business while keeping a traditional day job.

Not everyone has the time to create their meals, especially if they have specific dietary needs. A personal chef can become an essential part of keeping the day-to-day aspects of a family moving. Being flexible in this business will help you stay competitive. Don’t just think of dinners or working with only one family. You can offer a week’s worth of healthy lunches or quick breakfasts. You may also want to be on call for special family or holiday events. Specializing in a specific area such as gluten free, low calorie or vegetarian will also help you target people looking for solutions to more specific needs.
Veronica V., Have you found anything yet? You said you are great with customer service and sales. Have you ever thought about direct sales? I am a consultant for Rodan+Fields, an anti-aging company founded by the very same dermatologists that created ProActiv. We are not a party company (though if you like hosting parties you sure can). We don’t have any quotas. I would love to talk to you if interested! Thanks!
Digital marketing is an umbrella term used to describe services such as social media marketing, SEO auditing, content writing, etc. Developing, implementing and managing marketing campaigns calls for creative thinking and an understanding of target audiences. If you are a people person, with a knack for coming up with crisp, creative content that can grasp the attention of audiences, this is the job for you. If you are internet-savvy and possess basic computer skills, that’s an added benefit.
Take the time to develop your skills at either making your own music, or becoming a pro at mixing, and your side business idea of dj-ing local events could turn into a much bigger endeavor. Though you'll first need to command a solid knowledge of sound design, mixing and music production before expecting to land your first gig with this business idea, as developing an entirely new skill set is not for the faint of heart.

I am currently a stay at home Mom and have been searching for almost two years for the right position. I have found a couple positions with Flexjobs but none have offered a “steady income”. I am searching for a position that would allow flexible work hours but be guaranteed. I am looking for something that would utilize my 10 years of experienced in Human Resources field, customer service, data entry, payroll, employee benefits etc.
