After reading this blog I decided to try one of the places – Clickworker – thought it was right up my alley. I assume these are legit online businesses, but unfortunately, as soon as I signed up with all my information – my Facebook account was hacked! I’m concerned as to what else might happen, but hoping that was it and my account at Clickworker was closed fast enough. Just be careful….
I do work on my computer while he is up and playing and then when it's nap time I make my phone calls! I get my list of contacts and numbers ready before he lays down, so I have as much time as possible to make calls for follow up or recruiting. It's worked out really well so far!! Love my baby boy and my “job” I'm so happy to find a balance that meets everyone's needs! – Tiffany Lynch of 3000BC
Like to plan dream vacations, but can’t always go on them? Do the next best thing and plan them for someone else! A travel planner specializes in providing custom itineraries based on their client’s needs. Your goal will be to create the ultimate experience within the client’s budget. Research skills will be a necessity for this business idea, as you’ll need to look up local information such as restaurants, museums and other attractions.

Stay-at-home moms can earn money from working with online recruiting agencies where you’ll be paid referral fees for every successful recruitment. You can also launch your own recruitment business by directly reaching out to companies that need to hire employees. Start small, and then grow your empire once you have learned the ropes of online recruitment.

Work-from-home jobs come in all varieties, and not all of them are legit. So my first tip for work-from-home parents is: Beware of scams! If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of any job that requires you to part with cash up-front, as well as anything that "promises" or "guarantees" overnight riches yet doesn't have a set pay rate. If you're considering a position but suspect it might be a scam, check with the Better Business Bureau or the Trade Commission.

First of all, I want to thank you for posting this, it made my evening. I just completed filling out the Happiness Hero application and used to work remote from home last year, now I am in an office here in Houston, TX. My wife and I found out several weeks ago that we are expecting our first kiddo, due in May, and this article could not have been more inspiring. On top of that we are building our first custom home so there is lots happening in our life! The opportunity that Buffer provides for it’s team members is incredible, it’s one big family and each person is at a different place in life yet that doesn’t get in the way of folks helping each other out and encouraging one another.
Having grandparents or other relatives as your childcare provider can be a win-win situation, as long as expectations, parenting philosophies, and schedules are discussed in advance. Along these same lines, a “kid swap” with like-minded friends (you host their kids one day, then they reciprocate) can be a great part-time solution, giving your child the opportunity for play dates both inside and outside your home.
This business is ideal for current and former teachers, which is why many teachers begin their home tutoring business as a part-time job. You must be a people person, as most of the business regards direct, one-on-one interaction with others. It helps to be good with children of all ages, as they comprise the vast majority of your customers. Finally, it helps to be organized and self-motivated: conducting home tutoring as a full-scale business means managing many contacts, reaching out to local schools, and making sure you have enough time during each session for your various clients.
Blogging is certainly a profitable enterprise if you put the time in, and so-called Mummy blogging is at an all-time high. You can make money from placing adverts on your blog site, and selling ebooks or other resources to your subscribers. You can also get free gifts from brands or even free days out when your audience is large enough which is another added bonus.

One of the most promising side-hustle options for stay-at-home moms is to become a certified transcriptionist. As a certified transcriptionist, you can work from your personal computer, receive audio files online and then transcribe them into text format. It offers flexible hours, allows you to stop when necessary and does not require a technical background.
Have patience with circumstances, with your newborn, with your spouse, and especially with yourself. Patience gives you the time and space to allow yourself to forgive yourself if mistakes are made, and will likewise allow you time for reflection so that the next time will be better — that is, to help you regroup and assess [re-frame] things not as setbacks but as exciting learning experiences. Moreover, patience allows for better time management and for improved personal esteem. – Marie Ruediger of www.Ruediger.ws

College counsellors come in all shapes and sizes. Their primary duty is to help guide students through an important period in their lives. Some counselors focus on admissions, career advice, financial aid, athletics, extracurricular activities, and other concerns. There are institutions looking out for part-time college counselors, making this a fantastic side business idea, or you can even start your own practice and charge anywhere from $25-$100+ per hour for your consultative services if you're well-versed on the subject.
I freelance a bit, along with doing some VA (virtual assistant) work for other bloggers. I also earn a bit with sponsored posts, affiliate sales, and advertising on my blog. I have also self-published a book, Intentional Marriage, and create printables which I sell in my shop. – Crystal at Serving Joyfully (Shannon here! Crystal is one of several VAs that I work with to help me with the blog. She is an absolute wiz with graphics and is responsible for many of the pretty images you see here on Affording Motherhood.)
This is a no-brainer. To maximize efficiency, you have to make the most of every available moment. "If I'm waiting for a conference call, I'll pay some bills online, start planning my family's meals for the week or give the room a quick tidy up," says work-from-home mom Kristi from Miami, Florida. "This has actually made me more productive in all areas of my life. And when I do get the chance to sit down in the evening and relax, I can do so knowing I've achieved a lot during my working hours."
If you have a knack for connecting with people and the willingness to take on some risk, a commission-based freelance sales role could be a great side business idea for you. Many startups seek part-time and commission-only salespeople, especially when they're just getting started, which means you'll often be able to make this a home based business idea. Develop your sales strategies, become an inside sales rep and perfect your cold calling skills on the side in your free time for nothing but commission, negotiate a little equity and you could profit big time if you're pitching a solid product and the startup succeeds. Start your sales education with the acclaimed books, Secrets of a Master Closer and To Sell is Human by famed bestselling author Daniel Pink and you'll be well on your way to getting this side business idea off the ground.
Choosing the path of entrepreneurship, and working on your side business idea, is without a doubt riskier than being content with holding a 9-5 job. It requires way more sacrifice. However, once you’re reaping the lifestyle benefits of being your own boss and hustling your way into making significantly more money with your business idea than you ever could at your day job, the hard work will have all been worth it. So, let’s talk business ideas.
Who says blogging can’t bring in the bucks? Blogging is an excellent way to make money while you write about topics that truly matter to you. As a blogger for this freelance telecommuting job, you’ll write about a specific industry, such as fashion, in a fun and comedic style. In order to apply for this position, you must have previous blogging experience, as well as a portfolio that includes fashion-related pieces—and a good sense of humor.
Many families with kids, including single-parents, have very limited time resources, creating a demand for part-time child care providers (and a business idea opportunity for you). If you love kids and have some spare time, you can earn plenty of side income by looking after children while their parents are away. Just be sure to identify the particular age group you're comfortable caring for and you’re all set after any necessary certifications. Establishing a home-based daycare center capable of servicing six or more kids is also a lucrative way to really expand upon this business idea if you have the right environment for it.
I am It works Independent Distributor I have been on for 1 moth now I make $1,000 a month due to the team I am on and anyone who joins under me will always have money in their pocket. The difference between me and other leaders is that we support our team mates if they need or are struggling with meeting their monthly quota. This is a great job for single moms struggling to make ends meet. I was backed up in bills when I joined. I am now up to date on things I never thought I would be on. Email me now to change your life for good forever.
I love this post! I meant to comment on your Facebook post about this and in true new mom fashion, I forgot to come back and do it. So here’s my little story…it has provided WAY more than I initially thought and has continued to provide. I’m a SAHM to a toddler and newborn. I used to teach and my husband teaches as well. After cutting expenses in our own budget, the next best way for us to save more money was to make money. I decided to open an Etsy shop (Joyful Art Designs) and sell printable signs. I spent 6 months preparing to open and a lot of hours the first several months to make it successful. The hard work has paid off and I’ve now replaced my teaching income if I had our two kids in day care. Right now I put in about 1-3 hours a day if I can since we have a newborn. I love blogging, but it’s a hobby, whereas this is a business. Thanks for letting us share our businesses…this is great for those searching to make money.
Graphic designer Louise Ayres, meanwhile, took an online business course designed specifically for mums to give her the knowledge and confidence she needed to monetise her existing skills. Online courses and resources are a great way to get the knowhow, guidance and training you need to start a successful business, and can be a very wise investment.
Unfortunately, not all companies are on board with full-time remote-job arrangements. Some have pulled back because they believe that their employees could benefit from more face-to-face interactions. In 2013, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, in her bid to turn the company around, famously demanded that remote employees report back to the office. (In June, Yahoo was acquired by Verizon and Mayer resigned.)
Great stuff. Much of our remote culture (we are 20ppl today) came from the inspiration we got from reading your stories. We have a fully remote and distributed team and deal with the same types of challenges. In the beginning it wasn’t natural to have our kids show up in the screen. It felt wrong and unprofessional. As time goes by, we learn to relax into the uniqueness of this experience and enjoy it fully. Thanks for inspiring us on the way. Luís @ skore.io
When your home doubles as an office, set aside a spot just for work. This can be an office in a spare room, a nook in the kitchen or even a desk in a large closet. Wherever you choose to work, keep a baby monitor on the desk to keep an eye (and ear) on your little one. To be safe, put your baby down for a nap before you jump on a call or want to get lost in a project. Sara Ledterman, a mother of two who successfully launched Adorno, an online home decor magazine and retail site, says it's important to "have a space where you can have at least some sound barrier and focus time when on a deadline."
Love the list here! It’s difficult to go out to increase our household income, especially when my kids are home schooled. I tried doing crafts but I guess you need to be patient enough to gain the skills and be good enough with it. Right now I’m doing online selling on amazon and hoping for the best. https://tinyurl.com/y7pukxjz for those who are starting out with online selling.

Day in, day out, I have to tell my kids to leave me the hell alone, and I constantly feel bad about it. Do they think my work is more important than they are? It’s not. But sometimes it has to be. What does it to do to them that I’m constantly shutting my office door in their face or handing them over to another woman? And sure, I get to pop out to see them sometimes when I get a break, but then they freak out when I have to go back to my office, so it’s almost better not popping out to see them in the first place. And you know what really feels terrible? When you’re sitting at your desk and you can hear them bawling downstairs because they fell and they’re calling, “I want Mommmmyyy” and you’re dying to go to them but you can’t because you’re working, so you have to trust that someone else can hug them enough or sing them the boo-boo song or figure out that they’re faking it and tell them to shake it off.
On the other hand, for some people, a home-based business is the only attractive option. Some businesses would be hemorrhaging money if they purchased or rented an unnecessary physical space. If you create beautiful artwork, great blogs, tasty treats, lovely candles, or use your creativity some other way to create unique things, a home-based business might be the right option for you.
As long as you can follow directions and catch on quickly, data entry work is a breeze and you can do it at home. SigTrack offers seasonal data entry jobs from home. The tasks involve keying in voter registration and petition forms. You just need to make sure you meet a few technical requirements when it comes to having the right equipment for the job.
I also know what it’s like to spend every waking minute with your kids when you’re a stay-at-home mom. Trying to figure out what the hell you’re going to do with them for four hours until the stores open at 10 a.m. because they woke up at six. Playing with them in the playroom for hours and then looking at your watch and realizing it’s really only been five minutes. Walking around a parachute singing “Pop Goes the Weasel” and thinking, “Ahhh, yes, this is why I got a master’s degree.” Sitting down for lunch with them and asking, “What’s your favorite color?” because that’s the kind of crap you ask when you’re trying to have a conversation with a 3-year-old. You know that saying, absence makes the heart grow fonder? Well, here’s another saying. Constant presence makes you want to grab the nearest cup of bleach and drink it.
A dried flower business will sell dried flowers to hobbyists or craft stores. A flower preservation business will save important flowers, like wedding bouquets, for interested parties. Owners may do one or both of these services, but they are separate. Dried flowers do have a demand amongst a variety of people who use them to finish their craft projects. Flower preservation is perfect for those who want to scrapbook their memories, or fill boxes and chests with important mementos. Demand has increased for dried flowers over the past few years, as more people discover easy and fun DIY challenges.
If you have some artistic talent, you can start just about any business that reflects your abilities. Sell paintings online or create your own designs and sell them on merchandise through sites like CafePress. Art doesn’t necessarily mean drawing either. If you have a talent for jewelry, sewing or any artistic endeavour, there are many ways to turn that passion into profit.
Have you ever heard of an actuary? In the past, it was used to describe a person who analyzes statistics in order to calculate risks and premiums for insurance companies. However, the job title has expanded to include many more industries that can benefit from data mining and economic forecasting. If you have a degree in mathematics, finance or statistics, look into getting your license through Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) or Society of Actuaries (SOA).

Deanne Akerson: As a maternity and breastfeeding apparel brand, our customers are moms. Our team of work-from-home-moms are uniquely positioned to deliver an incredible customer experience simply because they’re moms themselves, and they understand the needs of our customers perfectly! They know what it’s like to be pregnant, breastfeeding, sleep-deprived, because they have been there so recently themselves. This is a benefit to the company in so many ways; from knowing what kind of content creation to focus on, what new apparel products to make next, and how to interact on social media. It simply makes sense to employ work-from home moms who are also experiencing the same crazy, beautiful life stage as our customers.

I have my hand in almost every one of these categories. You know, of course that I blog here at AffordingMotherhood.com. I have a couple of books on Amazon: 76 Free Things to Do with Kids and Natural Birth Stories. I also have a shop on Etsy where I design purses and knitting needle cases that you can sew yourself. You may not know that my “real” job is working from home as an architect. I haven’t tried direct marketing or in-home childcare yet, but who knows?!
It doesn’t have to be books that you review, it can be whatever you like. If you like movies like me, then start a film critic website and place affiliate links to the corresponding DVDs/BluRay products. You might have small children, you could set up a site reviewing children’s products, whether it’s toys, prams, clothes, etc. Write a product review and find an affiliate link for that product. You might love gadgets, video games, arts & crafts, cooking, whatever it is, you can write your own product reviews for them.
Web designers are incredibly valuable for technology companies—which is why becoming a freelance web designer is a top side business idea today. Web design is all about mastering the art of creating a beautiful, value-driven experience for the people using a website or app. There are always new websites popping up in need of professional web design, and foundational books like HTML & CSS: Design and Build Websites by acclaimed web designer Jon Duckett and Don't Make Me Think by user experience legend Steve Krug will get you started down the right path to quickly determining whether or not becoming a web designer is a viable side business idea for you.
You could probably send a gift basket to someone for just about anything going on in their life. From birthdays, holidays, get well wishes or congratulations, gift baskets are one of the perfect ways a person can let someone know they are thinking of them. As a business opportunity, if you love doing something on the creative side, this could be an ideal business for you. There are various ways to enter this business – from starting it on your own from scratch to working with an established franchise. A quick search online for gift basket franchises should turn up some ideas if you decide to go that route.
If you love weddings and are a detail-oriented and organized person, you may want to consider becoming a home-based bridal consultant. With many women juggling their work life with their home life, managing a huge event like a wedding may seem nearly impossible. Working with a bridal consultant is great way to help alleviate extra stress during this time.
And don’t be afraid to think outside the box a little. For example, nannying/daycare might seem like a little too much parenting, but it would allow you to spend time with your own children while also earning money. After all, as a parent, you likely already have the kid-wrangling skills that would make you an awesome caregiver for other children as well.

Owners of grant writing businesses are adept at finding foundations, government entities and other funding sources and applying for funding on behalf of their non-profit clients. You will, in short, serve as a matchmaker, putting together funding sources and needs. You’ll continually seek grant opportunities and write succinctly, persuasively and in an organized manner in filling out requests for proposals (RFP) to win funding.

If you love to write and illustrate and can’t keep good stories out of your head, you may want to give writing a children’s book a try. Luckily, with the iPad and Kindle, it’s easier than ever to get your story out to the masses. You can test your story ideas out with ebook apps on these devices. If one gets extremely popular, you can publish it afterwards.
Finding a work-at-home job can seem daunting at first, particularly for moms who may already have a full life. But when trying to make the shift from the office to a work-at-home job, the first thing to consider is whether you can telecommute your current job. If the answer is no, you may want to start thinking about moving your career in a different direction.
If you have got very flexible muscles, and a great dancer; then you may want to consider teaching people how to dance. These day, more than ever in the world, there is the need to be able to dance- be it for social reasons, and commercial purposes. This is one of the reasons why you may want to take up this business seriously if you have the knack. This is a good business idea for stay at home mums, as well as working class ones.
This last one was probably the best thing for me, my team emotionally. We never want our children to think work is something that parents do that takes time and attention away from them. Work is healthy and good for them, and I think it’s appropriate to find ways to engage them is good for their overall development and could shape their attitude towards work in the future.
I AM A QUALIFIED PRIMARY TEACHER AND NEEDED SOMETHING TO TAKE MY HOURS OF WORK DOWN AS I FIND TERM TIME HOURS AND DEMANDS QUITE CHALLENGING. I LOOKED AT SEVERAL DIRECT SELLING OPPORTUNITIES AND FOUND ONE THAT IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. I EARN AS MUCH AS I CHOOSE TO PUT IN THE WORK FOR, AND THERE IS A FANTASTIC SUPPORT NETWORK. IT WAS SOMETHING I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER DO AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
This business is perfect for seasoned business owners or upper level managers who are looking for a career change. A business consulting firm must be experienced in business management, marketing, and team building and management. They must also understand how to generate revenue from a wide range of businesses and expand existing streams of income.
I am a stay at home mom of a 6 month old boy. I had to quit my fulltime job 2 years before I even got pregnant due to health issues. I decided to continue to use my college education and passions to bring in extra income. I became a Pampered Chef Consultant to help other busy women and men learn how to make quick and healthy meals. I am a Personal Trainer by profession so I also train clients in my home. I do photography sessions occasionally and I now babysit occasionally in my home! God is good. He provides when we give him our talents!
Moms are fairly gifted in helping their own children learn new concepts and ideas, and this skill is easily transferrable to being an online tutor. The higher level of education you have in a certain subject, the more money you can make. Ages of students that need tutors range from elementary all the way to college. You can use websites to connect you with students, post an ad, or let people know about the services you are offering by word of mouth.
There are a lot of hard parts. When you work from home people assume you have all of the time in the world and that you have nothing to do. So you should be able to help with all of the things they need or can’t do because they have to go to work. Which is farthest from the truth… I got way more accomplished when I had a job away from home. The kids are also home all day so the house is always a mess, they aren’t making a mess at the daycare that somebody else cleans. I went from what I thought was a tough corporate job to a pretty simple/easy work from home job. I was surprised at how way more difficult it was to be a work/stay at home mom. – Summer Price
Who doesn’t love cupcakes? This might just be the cutest, most fun business on this list. If you’ve got a talent for creating beautiful (and tasty!) cupcakes, this might be the idea for you. There might be hoops to jump through in order to get your kitchen certified for a home bakery if the zoning laws permit it. Depending on the popularity of your cupcakes, though, you may find yourself in a storefront before you know it.
This is quite a suggestive list. I am 32, turning 33 in Oct, and have 15 years in the Child Care field at a preschool, but would someday like to start working from home. As far as skills outside of Child Care as far as client relations & such, my other skills are crafting/bead making, professional organizing, and can type about maybe 50-60 wpm. Also was thinking of being an elderly companion, running errands, etc. Therefore I am wondering what I can really do from home with all this. I was thinking of creating some cards on vistaprint and just freelance as a Mother’s or Family Helper for those who have a rough time getting things done around the home, & who just don’t have the time of day whether it’s kids, relationships, family, etc. Would that make enough money providing I get a decent amount of clients? I am from south Florida just near Fort Lauderdale, so I’m just not sure. I know I don’t want to do child care forever, just cause it can be stressful at times. What do ya think? 🙂

As a working-full-time-out-of-the-home mom-of-a-preschooler, I struggle a lot with trying to get everything I want to do done. I do prioritize my time but admit my downfall is putting everything I think “needs” to get done first, meaning I never get to the things I *want* to do. I would LOVE to see an actual schedule of you and Mr. FW’s routine. We live in what I’d call a homestead-lite, so I know that takes a fair amount of time, too. It’d be great to see your methods for fitting everything in!
Once you have your basic website you can start adding regular articles and posts on your chosen subject. It’s important that you stick to your chosen niche, as this is what your readers will be expecting to read on your site. There would be no point in me writing a post about my holiday to Japan for this website as it has nothing to do with making money online!
Your newborn doesn’t understand the concept of work time and mommy time, and she won’t understand it for a couple of years. She’s going to need stimulation, human interaction and entertainment. You will have to learn to work with a baby in one arm at a minimum. You can keep your baby nearby and more easily stimulated with a playpen kept in the office. Figuring out how to balance the work-life balance as a new mom is tough. You’re going to face unexpected challenges, and there’s a good chance certain tasks with slip your mind or fall through the cracks. Don’t beat yourself up. For the next few months, the name of the game is flexibility.

At 2, we’re down to one afternoon nap, long if we’re lucky, but I’ve been considering whether we can transition back to a work at home + kid at home schedule when JB is a little older and can do more self directed activities. It’s rather nice that they’re always growing and changing, you know that a transition can be right around the corner if you’re patient.
Do you have a passion for learning? Instructional Design is the process by which instructional materials and manuals are designed, developed, and delivered. Instructional Designers understand the learning process and how to convey it through the written word. While there are Instructional Design degree programs available, many Instructional Designers just have a teaching, marketing, or writing background. FlexJobs has a good list of work-at-home instructional design jobs.
Vintage clothing is all the rage, and many people would rather buy their clothes from eBay than go thrift shopping for themselves. Use this to your advantage by finding some great clothing at your local thrift shops, fixing it up at home and then listing it online. You don’t have to stop at clothes either. You may have a love for vintage or secondhand jewelry or even vintage brand-related products.
When Rachel Berliner was pregnant with her daughter Amy she was frustrated by the lack of healthy and tasty convenience food – so she decided to make her own. Today Amy’s Kitchen products are sold internationally (in the UK they’re available in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Ocado, Morrisons and more) and now-grown up Amy works for the successful family business.
Yoga is getting ever more popular, which means yoga instructors are more in demand than ever—making this another physically rewarding side business idea. Link up with a local yoga studio to teach nightly classes or offer personalized yoga in-home at a higher rate to pursue this kind of emotional and physical balance with others, during your free time while helping your bank balance, too.
Graphic design professionals create or maintain a visual look that might be carried out in signage, letterheads, ads, sales collateral material, website and digital content and virtually all other internal and external communications. This can involve logo design, fonts and typography, color and imagery selection and layout. The owner of a graphic design studio might work alone or have one or more employees to generate new business, work on existing projects and support the enterprise.
If you’re a parent, you already know you’ve got one of the best jobs around, with highly demanding (but adorable) bosses. But if you’re also in the market for a paying gig that balances with your mom life, there are lots of great options out there for you that don’t involve a cubicle and a 9-to-5 weekday grind. Flexible and part-time jobs are great because they give you more power over your own schedule, and can really help balance your home needs with your professional ones.
You don't mention your level of education or past work experience, but there are jobs out there that are work from home. I had a friend who took Jet Blue airline reservations from home. Keep in mind though that she did have to actually go into an office for 6 weeks of training and then when she was home she had to be fully separated from any goings-on in the house to guarantee Jet Blue's customers would not hear dogs barking and kids screaming while trying to make a reservation.
Being organized for the day goes far beyond making a to-do list. In addition to the emails, reports and other work-related tasks, think about the tasks and activities that will give you the most personal joy. Make sure you put time on the calendar for family-only activities to give your baby undivided attention. "Ensure there are at least two large daily blocks of time where you are totally devoted to your baby," advises Nicky Leonti, a family day care educator and mother of two boys. She recommends baby massage, playing age-appropriate games or going for a walk together. "The importance of this is that it helps them feel important, you get that connection and it tires them out so they have better sleep," she says.

I am a distributor with It Works. Started my journey in April to supplement my WAHM income as a staff recruiter for occupational, physical and speech therapist. I have a soon to be 2 year old and my husband and I realized it actually cost us more for me to work outside the home, and I was fortunate enough to be able to work out a situation with my employer to allow me to do my job from home. I have a sitter that helps from time to time to allow me time to meet deadlines, meetings, jobfairs. I schedule wrap appointments and parties when my husband is home. This also also allows me to have a positive work life balance for myself and gives our child a chance to have a mom at home but to still be able to have someone to give her undivided attention when I have work priorities. So far it is a win win for us.
Akerson: Yes, absolutely! Work-from-home-moms are incredible – even if your target customers aren’t mothers. They know how to maximize their time, because they are moms, and know what a resource time is. Many are also willing to work for less than you would pay if hiring full-time, simply because they want the flexibility of still putting their family first. And you don’t have to pay for a full-time role if what you need is less than that. You also don’t have to worry about employees taking sick time to stay home and care for sick kiddos, as they’re already working from home. Work-from-home-moms are amazing.
When my baby was born, I had no clue how unpredictable newborns could be. As moms, we have to stay flexible, and having a perfectly consistent schedule isn't realistic in the beginning. This means working when you can, even if it's just five minutes and you accomplish one small task. If you're waiting for a long chunk of uninterrupted time, things won't get done. Keep your work area organized and checklists in place and do what you can, when you can. – Stephanie Hodges
This business idea will take a little more effort and website design knowledge than my Etsy Store example, as you will have to purchase your own suitable domain name or use a Blog domain already, then install the Shopify App onto your WordPress site, decide on how you will fulfill your products (Drop shipper or Warehouse/purchasing online then shipping to customer); and managing any customer experience issues.
Yes! I’m a stay-at-home mom and started working as a consultant for Usborne Books in January — loving it! I do parties with friends online literally while putting my son to bed, and I did an amazing reading incentive program in my daughter’s school which involved one brief meeting a friend watched my kids during and all the rest was done after they were in bed. Perfect for me right now! usbornebookstores.com
Teaching and tutoring English as a second language is a great way to make a solid side business idea work, not to mention opening doors for you to travel the world if you'd like. While full ESL (English as a Second Language) accreditation is recommended, as long as you’re a native speaker, there are people in countries such as Hong Kong or the UAE who are willing to pay upwards of $25/hr for you to teach them English via Skype. Indeed, Learn4Good and Remote.co often have remote english tutoring jobs posted, check back frequently. Then once you land that remote job, you'll need somewhere more professional than your dining room table to meet with students—check out this post about how to find places to work remotely and you'll officially graduate this side business idea into a full-time endeavor for yourself.

Starting a home-based business is a great way to do this. In fact, 52 percent of U.S. companies operate as home businesses (source) and many of today’s biggest brand names were established by stay-at-home moms – (Dorothy) Gerber, Mrs. (Debbi) Fields, and Julie Aigner-Clark (Baby Einstein), to name but a few. But what types of businesses can grow and thrive in the home environment?

I really like this article and I think that you have done a wonderful job! I am going to become a new mother here soon and I am really contemplating being a stay at home mom. I would like the additional income so I am hoping to find a job that I can do from home. This is all very new to me and to be honest I am kinda scared. I have been working at my current position for over 6 years now.Do you have any recommendations for me to get started?
We have alot of our agents who sell Disney. If you want more information visit http://www.travelathome.com I am also happy to put you in touch with some of our agents who are doing it so you can ask them questions. I started out doing travel from home back in 1997. I started taking on other moms who wanted to work from home doing travel – I trained them and helped them. Then before I knew it I had over 150 agents! Now I have a full administrative team and I still work from home. We have a great group of agents and they always help one another out on our Facebook page. If you have questions I am happy to answer them.

We do have our spontaneous moments–like a last minute decision one morning last week to take a day trip to a thrift store and a brewery–but generally, we do the same things on the same days each week. This schedule allows me to plan when I’ll write and manage my deadlines. It also ensures that Babywoods gets plenty of socialization with other toddlers–we attend weekly play groups and host friends several days a week at our house.
Most work-at-home parents who employ part-time or no childcare will work while simultaneously caring for a child. This works best the older a child is. With an infant or a toddler, parents can only work in short stretches or while the child naps. School-age children should be able to play independently. However, always be mindful that this kind of multitasking on a parent’s part can decrease the quality of the parent-child time.
Learning doesn’t only happen in a traditional classroom setting. Education is one of the most popular work-from-home jobs out there, allowing teachers and educators alike the opportunity to school students from anywhere in the country—and frankly, the world. For this full-time remote job, you’ll work one on one with students virtually offering math tutoring in geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, AP statistics, and so on via iPad and iPhone applications. You’ll need to have a bachelor’s degree and a current teaching license to apply for this position.
When Deeanne Akerson launched Kindred Bravely, the maternity and breastfeeding apparel line, she was a stay-at-home mother of two small children working out of her guest bedroom and running a business on her own. A year into running the start-up she needed to hire her first employee, a part-time customer service representative. Her hire was a mother of three who wanted to work flexible hours to take care of her family.

This arrangement allows me to stay right in the heart of my field while saving on the cost of childcare. My career is important to me and I never really pictured myself being happy staying at home without working. I get the self-worth I feel from continuing my career while also having precious time with my son while he is young. It’s the best of both worlds. – Meaghan

The downsides are, I assume, obvious: it's harder to concentrate on work; you feel guilty for not giving your child your full attention; you worry you're not stimulating the baby enough (even if you spend all your non-work energy doing this, you still worry); you have zero personal time, ever; you worry that you're not working enough; you worry that you are failing as both a parent and an employee/service provider. Further downsides can include not being taken as seriously at work, people assuming that your work is subpar because you're doing it with a child around, and people assuming that your parenting is subpar because you're doing it while you're working.

I am a STAM working 3 jobs… all part time and from home… (can u believe it?) But really, I started with the mystery shopping, and that was OK. The positive was you get paid, the challenge was not frequently and sometimes needed to wait a month for payment to be transferred to the paypal account. Then I became and infant massage teacher and love this. REDTENTSALE is my Ebay store, I sell so many various items I find from wholesellers and it’s nice, I do this when the kids are asleep; anyone can… very manageable and nice “but light” income. I would say the one by far that is taking me places is Real Estate Marketing.
Also please note, I’ve tried my very hardest to confirm the accuracy of all the sources mentioned in the list. To my knowledge every single one of the jobs I’ve listed is legitimate. However, I’m only human and sometimes I make mistakes. If you feel that one of these companies should be removed, let me know. Likewise, if you’ve had an awesome experience with a company that hasn’t made it on the list let me know in the comments and I’ll add it.

Baking cookies and cupcakes at home is another emerging trend in Singapore. Food catering can be a lucrative business for stay-at-home moms who can run the operations from home. You can start part-time, working only weekends, then expand full-time as you get more clients. This is a serious business venture where the individual has to be adept in supply chain management and food quality assurance.
I love being able to set my own working hours, which allows me to do all the school drop-offs and pick-ups, and not caring peanuts about my appearance (unless I'm doing a conference call, in which case I will try to at least make my top half look semi-presentable). I have complete control over when I work, where I work, and, to a certain extent, how much I earn.
Anyone can sell goods on Amazon, provided you have products to sell (or buy low, then resell). If you’re the type to hit all the local garage sales each weekend, there’s all sorts of valuable things that can be resold online as a side business idea. If you want to step your Amazon selling game up, check out this detailed guide to Amazon and eBay retail arbitrage on Entrepreneur featuring an interview with Julie Becker and several drop-shippers who've grown this home based business idea from side business idea into a lucrative money-maker.

Greetings Alexa, AWESOME post.. you really have hit on everything. I went the blogging route.. and love it. Yet I didn’t start there.. as I looked through your list I had to chuckle.. as I remember doing the customer service from home.. See I’m a single mom.. my oldest is now 14 and I started searching for work from home opportunities when she was 1 years old.. I built everything up… and have been full time when my oldest turned 13!! Started by exchanging time for money.. with the customer service and that kept me in the place of having to exchange time for money.. so I decided to build my own business.. and this is what set me FREE.. Love your post as it really leads one through the journey of a VERY possible life.. Thanks so much for putting this information together. Keep Smiling!
When I started it, I thought I was doing the right thing for my child by being the one to care for her. I wanted to spend time with her during those years before school sucks up so many of her hours, so I would be the one there to love her through skinned knees and milestones reached. I still feel that way to some extent -- after all right now I'm a stay at home mom -- but I urge you to hear the other people here who are recommending day care and nannies. My daughter struggled in preschool last year in a way that the daycare kids hadn't, because she wasn't used to dealing with so many other kids for hours at a time. Our bond is strong, but she also has a strong bond with her father, and loves and obeys him just like me, even though he hasn't put in all that at-home time with her, so you needn't worry your kids won't love you etc. as much if they are in daycare. There are many social benefits to daycare that you can't really provide at home. And trying to provide full time baby care yourself while you continue to work full time will definitely take a toll on your mental and even physical health and, I would guess, would also put a strain on your partnership.
Zeitcaster is a location-based service that delivers local event data. They frequently hire part-time data entry clerks to input time and location data, as well as categorize each event. Data Entry clerks are assigned to different types of events based on employee interest, for example: Art, Children & Family, Nature & Outdoors, etc. Pay is around $15/hour, likely dependent on location.
If you’re the sort who takes apart the computer for fun, operating an electronics repair shop out of your home is a natural decision. In particular, repairing iPads and other tablets would provide you with a great deal of business, as many tablet users are looking for a less expensive way to fix smashed screens and other damages that can be costly through the manufacturer. Median salary: $49,170.
Did I find this article useful? Yes, yes and a resounding yes!!! I happen to have a friend from Florida who has been bugging me about an online income opportunity because she knows I am a freelancer who earns through online jobs. But since we live worlds apart, I just didn’t know how to help her. I am definitely sharing this to her and I am checking some of the things listed here too for myself. Thanks Alexa!
Wow this is a well-done list! And I see all the time you put into it has paid off considering it has been shared over 50,000 times! Congrats to you! I personally like the virtual assistant idea. I have not done it, but I love the idea of it and I think it can be a great way for decent income if you find the right company. Just takes some time and effort to apply to some places if you want to make significant income. I was doing research on VA jobs and it looked like there are multiple companies available to get with. It kind of looked like the higher paying companies wanted a bit of experience though. Anyway, great article thanks!
Digital marketing is an umbrella term used to describe services such as social media marketing, SEO auditing, content writing, etc. Developing, implementing and managing marketing campaigns calls for creative thinking and an understanding of target audiences. If you are a people person, with a knack for coming up with crisp, creative content that can grasp the attention of audiences, this is the job for you. If you are internet-savvy and possess basic computer skills, that’s an added benefit.

These businesses are necessary because most businesses have a need for data entry, information tracking, organization, and analysis. Popular websites offer jobs that can be bid on by data entry businesses, which then enter data for any company that needs it. Most large companies contract with independent data entry companies for either part-time or full-time data entry needs.

This is a great list! I’m hoping it will be very helpful to me… I haven’t been able to work all my life due to health problems. I have loved the idea of working and earning my own money, just never had the chance. So working from home could change my life! Do you have any advice on a really easy, simple way to get started and earning soon? I’m not looking to earn a lot or any thing, and it doesn’t need to be fun or interesting, I just want something easy to start with. I don’t particularly have many skills, but I can type and I have the free time. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks 🙂

It isn’t always easy for people to figure out what’s best for them. Sometimes we just need someone to help us along and to get us through the rough patches. Career and life coaches can help people get to that better place more easily and quickly than they would on their own. If you love people and have a true desire to help them, this may be the business opportunity for you.

But before you can graduate from side business idea and start earning a full-time living as a graphic designer, you'll need to build your skills—I recommend starting with reading the foundational book Graphic Design School and Steal Like an Artist, the incredible book by Austin Kleon about how to become more creative. To accelerate your education in becoming a graphic designer even quicker, check out the online courses Graphic Design Fundamentals and The Graphic Design Bootcamp. Then once you're an expert at your craft, you can further your education and move up to offering  more hands-on experiences like design sprints for higher-value clients around the world.
I include the word “ruthless” for good reason: my prioritization is without any ruth whatsoever. Pre-baby and pre-frugality, I tried to do everything perfectly, on time, and while wearing fabulous clothes, makeup, with curled hair and painted nails (toes too). Now? I shower daily and wear (somewhat) clean clothes. That much is an accomplishment as far as I’m concerned. Note that I did not mention brushing my hair.
Hi there! I have a direct sales for you to look at, if it hasn’t already been mentioned.. Jamberry!! I’m a WAHM who does Jamberry and I absolutely love it. Online courses are a great way for people to learn a new skill, language, or even get degrees and licenses. If you have knowledge that’s in demand, you can use that to your advantage to create online courses. Sharing that knowledge is a very enriching and rewarding way to make money. At most, you’ll meet with students via video chat, so you’ll never have to leave your home.
It's one chunk of the day when you can generally expect to be able to plug away without interruption (at least not from your child). Whether your kid sleeps for one hour or three, use this time to finish assignments that require your complete focus and concentration, says Erin O'Donnell, a mom of two and freelance writer and editor in Milwaukee, who often schedules work-related phone calls during her 20-month-old Jonas's naps. If for some reason he isn't tired, they have quiet time instead: O'Donnell puts him in his crib with books and closes the door. "I can usually get in 20 minutes of work before he grows restless," she says. If Jonas wakes up while she's on a work call and begins crying, O'Donnell has trained herself to resist hanging up and rushing right in to check on him. "It hurts a little bit to listen to him," she says. "But it won't kill me -- or him." Plus, she believes it's important for him to learn how to soothe himself.
“Living in the midwest, our company policy is that if the local schools have a snow day, we are closed. This is not only for the safety of our employees on bad roads, but also because then we have a complex issue of ‘all the kids are home but we need to work’.  One particular snow day, we also had a lot online orders to pack up and ship out. Thinking it would be a great idea to go in when the store was closed and get the orders packed, we loaded up all 5 kids and headed into the store. It would have been fine except one of us forgot to lock the door behind us. Within minutes the store was full of customers, and the backroom was full of 5 very energetic and loud children. We quickly realized it was maybe not the best idea.”
You'd have to be living under a rock not to know about the success many moms have had in making money blogging. That's the good news. The bad news is that the market for any blog, mom-related or not, is crowded. Successful blogging requires picking a niche and focusing on reaching the target market for that topic. There are many ways to make money from blogging, including affiliate marketing, advertising (i.e., Adsense), creating and selling information products and more.

Driving for one of the two globally expanding app-centric taxi alternative services, Uber or Lyft can still be a fairly lucrative way to earn money as a side business idea on nights and weekends—working only when you want. But before you dive head first into this side business idea, do your homework and calculate the costs of extra gas, mileage, tires, wear & tear and usage on your vehicle—it's not a guaranteed business idea that'll turn a huge profit every weekend.
Love all these ideas and the creativity of moms wanting to stay home and yet contribute financially for their families. Thank you for including all these ideas. I am a mom of four boys and have worked for Pampered Chef for six years. I love cooking, helping others develop a love for cooking and eating healthy! With the current trends in food and in women/men wanting to cook at home more than eating out, my business continues to take off. The benefits have been incredible. I easily earn hundreds of dollars a month and reap bonuses for staying active (from tote bags to jewelry to free products that I am able to give as gifts.) I always advise women I speak with who are looking for opportunities such as this to find what you are passionate about, make sure your husband is on board with it, pray and then go for it!
Do you love being around dogs but can’t commit to having one of your own? There is a big demand for dog walking for people who work long hours away from the home as well as dog sitting for when dog owners go out of town. This would give you and your kids the perfect opportunity to have fun with a four-legged friend without having to adopt one of your own.
