Before founding Chewbeads, Greenwald was an avid jewelry collector who worked in J. Crew’s merchandising department. Whenever she held babies, she noticed how drawn they were to her jewelry. So she decided to create a line that’s specifically made for babies to play with and chew on. The company now creates teething rings, rattles and even bath toys.
If you land a remote job, be open and share your experience with others. One of the most powerful forces in increasing the acceptance and availability of remote and flexible jobs is knowing that your managers or colleagues have done it too. “People appreciate the honesty,” says Carly, who now oversees a team of about 100 recruiters, some of whom are also remote. She will often share with them if she’s, say, stepping out to attend her child’s art show in the middle of the day. She likes to show “we have a life outside of what we do.”
I won't lie--I wouldn't trade those first few years with my daughter for anything. But this sort of arrangement isn't something that you should rely on. Take as much maternity leave as you can, and, after the first bit, try to spend a few hours a day doing something mentally taxing while you have the baby. Go read Dostoyevsky, or bug check some code, or something in your field(ish). You'll figure out pretty quickly if baby + work is a thing you can do. Even if it is, I strongly suggest having a backup babysitter in the wings--someone, anyone, who can step in if Easy Baby is suddenly Teething And Miserable Baby, or Colic Baby, or any number of other things that can turn easy babies into screaming terrors and difficult-but-doable situations into major disasters.
You can take online classes to improve your voice and get variations in your intonation. You need to get an understanding on natural pauses in conversation, breathing, holding the mic, intonation, etc. In order to capture a crystal clear recording, you might want to set up a home studio. Once you create a voice demo audio file, market it to various recording studios. And yes, there is a need to visit recording studios, so this is not a complete stay-at-home job!

Business owners should have a flexible schedule, so they can meet guests during the day, and take care of any issues that arise at night. Additionally, they should plan on working anytime the bed and breakfast is open, which for a typical B&B is every day. They don’t usually close down for holidays because these are busy travel times, but some bed and breakfast owners take several weeks, sometimes even a month or more, off during the slow season.
We might’ve spoken too soon when we said cupcake business was the cutest idea on our list. What could be cuter than combining tiny baked goods and our favorite furry friends? Much like a cupcake business, if you can get your kitchen certified, you can sell nutritious treats to pet owners in your area. And when it comes time to expand, you may even be able to sell to different markets by shipping your goods.
For those moms who are talented writers, there are many opportunities to get paid for contributing quality content. Blogs, websites and magazines are always looking for experts in their particular niche who have a way with words. The topics you can write about are endless, and you will be able to utilize your creativity and writing ability to generate substantial earnings whenever you have time to write.
Non-profits, universities, hospitals and other community organizations all have a great need for grant money to supplement their budgets, but grants are notoriously tricky to write for the first time. If you have experience writing grants or are willing to learn how to do it by practicing your skills without pay for a few non-profits, you can start a lucrative freelance grant writing business. According to eHow, grant writers can make anywhere from $40, 300 to $67,000.
If my job would consistently stay at 8 hours a day I think I could manage, but it never does. It takes everything out of me to try to get in more emails and projects from home and not get angry when my son tries to pound on my keyboard. When I do get angry, I remind myself that it is anger towards unrealistic work expectations and not my son's curiosity.
Last summer, furniture manufacturer Herman Miller told Working Mother that about 17 percent of its 57 open jobs were designated for full-time remote workers. The positions included talent recruiter, workplace-knowledge consultant, helpdesk technician and sales-operations manager. But Ann Noe, the company’s inclusiveness and corporate diversity senior program manager, says these jobs aren’t labeled as “remote” in the listings. So how can you tell if a job you’re interested in can be done remotely?
Who doesn’t love cupcakes? This might just be the cutest, most fun business on this list. If you’ve got a talent for creating beautiful (and tasty!) cupcakes, this might be the idea for you. There might be hoops to jump through in order to get your kitchen certified for a home bakery if the zoning laws permit it. Depending on the popularity of your cupcakes, though, you may find yourself in a storefront before you know it.
Tutoring. My friend Jenny tapped into a high-income community and used her teaching background to earn $40/hour helping with homework. The real money came when she bundled three kids together for group homework sessions, charging each family $25/hr. That’s $75 for an hour of work that can be done while your baby naps. Or, while you pay a teenager $10 to watch the baby in another room. This is one of those work at home jobs for moms that can be both financially beneficial and persoanlly rewarding as you help children learn.
Take your love for baking or cooking and turn it into your own business. Whether at an art fair, business convention, or community event, caricatures are a fun way to lighten the mood and get people to laugh at themselves. Caricatures are spontaneous illustrations that exaggerate or “cartoonize” the individual’s features. Initially, this artistic expression was simply done on ink and paper. The tradition has now grown to include digital illustrations, with a variety of printing options available.

If you are an attentive listener, you may seek for a transcriber position. The task is usually to transcribe audio content on different topics. A candidate needs to have great listening and typing skills. Great grammar knowledge is also a common requirement. If you are familiar with specific industries like law or medicine, it will be a bonus, but there are also audios on general topics. The special equipment is not necessary, except for good headphones and fast internet.

So, I put together a free master course for you to take that spreads out all of the work involved in starting a blog, into a series of action-packed lessons. I can't recommend it enough.

Flexjobs has literally hundreds of freelance, remote translator jobs available right now and if you're looking to land more remote work on the side of your other pursuits, check out my guide—how to get a remote job (this weekend).

Corporations have been really slow on the uptake with flex schedules and remote work. Not to mention the U.S.’s abysmal maternity leave and nursing accommodation rules! It’s unfortunate that more offices aren’t taking advantage of the technology available to them, but for those who can work from home, it is one step closer to taking full control of your own priorities!
It used to be that if you had a product to sell, you also had to have a storefront and all the costs associated with it. These days, you can sell anything to anyone anywhere in the world. Whether you’re marketing the organic honey from your backyard apiary or selling personalized linens that you embroider yourself, you can find a market for your products online.
"The idea of having her commute to our home office to do customer service didn't make sense," Akerson said. "It was sort of accidental that we hired a parent. It was a blessing to both of us that it was part-time though. Since the company was just starting out, we didn’t have the revenue to justify much in payroll yet, and as a mother of three, she did not want full-time work."
My wife is doing something similar. I will point out though that a lot of the ability here is child dependent. Our first child didn’t nap well and will not play on his own. It’s part of his temperament and when he was home no one can get work done. He’s five and goes to a public preschool for six hours a day at this point. My youngest is on a schedule. At two he still takes a one to two hour nap and is often content to self play. I guess what I’m saying is a lot depends on the kid.
Every day, I hear it: You’re so lucky you get to work from home. But guess what? Being a stay-at-home mom is hard, and being a working mom is hard, but being a work-at-home mom is the suckiest choice of all. It may not be worse than the single mom who has to hold down two or three jobs and never gets to be at home with her children, but it’s worse than going to an office 9 to 5 and it’s worse than staying home with the kids all day long. I’ve done all three, and that is my conclusion.
For many, beekeeping starts as a hobby. It doesn’t take them long, however, to realize what a fascinating and fulfilling career it can be. Beekeeping isn’t just about collecting honey; it’s about getting to know your bees, their behaviors, and their response to the natural environment around them. How rewarding would it be to parlay your passion into a career?
If you want to run a business from home that costs next-to-nothing and uses skills you already possess, an acting classes business is ideal. Actors usually come from a long background of disciplined training and continue to learn on the job every day. Having that kind of experience can make teaching a whole lot easier. With enough space, you can start an acting classes business in your living room, den, basement, garage--really, anywhere you have the space! As you grow your business, you may consider expanding into a studio, but your home is a great starting point.
First of all, I want to thank you for posting this, it made my evening. I just completed filling out the Happiness Hero application and used to work remote from home last year, now I am in an office here in Houston, TX. My wife and I found out several weeks ago that we are expecting our first kiddo, due in May, and this article could not have been more inspiring. On top of that we are building our first custom home so there is lots happening in our life! The opportunity that Buffer provides for it’s team members is incredible, it’s one big family and each person is at a different place in life yet that doesn’t get in the way of folks helping each other out and encouraging one another.
If you’ve always wanted to publish your own book as a side business idea, there never been a better time than now. That’s because access to self-publishing tools and marketplaces has never been easier and more affordable. This eBook writer currently earns up to a couple of thousand bucks each month from six ebooks she published; while you can reportedly demand around $1000 per eBook project serving as a ghostwriter. My good friend, Caroline Beaton used freelance writing as her side business idea to eventually go from secretary to self-employed, while focusing on her own personal development and looking inward to discover what she's truly passionate about.

From personal experience as a freelance content marketer, I can vouch for the profitability in this industry. I grew my side hustle into a $160,000/yr business before quitting my day job to pursue this business idea full-time; all you need is the right skills and experience to back it up. With startups, established brands, and even notable influencers needing to build credibility and grow their brands, professionals who can serve up compelling content enjoy a huge demand for their services. And, since brands will always need high quality content to bring in new customers, your skills will always remain an asset to invest in—especially since the nature of creating a content marketing strategy is an ever-evolving one. Start by tapping into your existing network with this business idea and begin tracking down local small business owners who could benefit from your marketing tactics, do a bang up job, ask for referrals and grow from there to the point where you're doing blogger outreach and spreading out to a wider market.

Flexible and part-time jobs are great because they give you more power over your own schedule, and can really help balance your home needs with your professional ones.

If HGTV is your must-watch channel, then a work-from-home job as a tour contributor could be a perfect match for you. Use your strong photography skills and eye for style to write house tours of homes of all sizes and styles. Increasingly, customer service positions (both the full-time job and part-time job varieties) are provided not through centralized, physical call center facility but through home-based employees who have access to a good phone line and high-speed internet connection. These jobs that you can do from home tend to be good for those that need to work remotely and are self-sufficient and organized even when not in an office environment.

The ideal nail salon owner is someone who appreciates fashion and beauty. In addition, a nail salon owner must be personable and friendly, as providing customers with a comfortable, pleasant atmosphere assures that they will return in the future and increases the chance that they will recommend your salon to those in their social sphere. It is very helpful for business owners to either possess prior business knowledge/experience or the willingness to educate themselves about business practices.
When I used to work at CreativeLive, I regularly paid $250-$500 (or even much more depending upon audience size) per episode for 90 seconds worth of advertisements on relevant podcasts like The Tim Ferriss Show, the #1 business podcast right now from the 4-Hour Workweek author, Tim Ferriss. The podcast has even helped Tim launch his latest New York Times bestseller, Tools of Titans to a wider readership.

I have babysitters come to my home to watch our son and entertain him for roughly 10 hours each week. While I have a babysitter, I normally take advantage of that time to work on my most important and/or most complicated tasks for the week. Also during that time, I normally leave to work at a coffee house. My son interacts better with the babysitter that way, and I can focus better on my job. – Ashleigh
Public notaries primarily serve as validators of, and impartial witnesses in public legal documents, especially those related to affidavits, oaths, deeds, estates, special-powers-of-attorney, and business agreements. Depending on the state, a full-time notary public earns an average annual salary of $36,000, which makes it a great business idea to do as a side hustle as you bring in money through other ways. If you want to get started with this business idea, here are the requirements and steps you need to consider in the US.

When Deeanne Akerson launched Kindred Bravely, the maternity and breastfeeding apparel line, she was a stay-at-home mother of two small children working out of her guest bedroom and running a business on her own. A year into running the start-up she needed to hire her first employee, a part-time customer service representative. Her hire was a mother of three who wanted to work flexible hours to take care of her family.
Stay at home, homeschooling mom of 4. My husband does a great job of supporting our family but I’ve become an independent distributor for 2 or 3 companies that we just love their products! My favorite for a home business would probably be Lilla Rose since the products are something almost any woman/girl can use and the company support is so great. – Tyra Whitlow at Lilla Rose
After earning a college degree in English, I married and had three kids. So now I’m a self taught seamstress and mostly take in clothes for alterations. With baby #3 very new, I’m not taking in much right now; my goal by next year is to bring in $800/mo. I’ve done everything from patching holes, recovering cushions, hemming prom dresses and fixing tattered toddler dress up clothes.

Graphic design professionals create or maintain a visual look that might be carried out in signage, letterheads, ads, sales collateral material, website and digital content and virtually all other internal and external communications. This can involve logo design, fonts and typography, color and imagery selection and layout. The owner of a graphic design studio might work alone or have one or more employees to generate new business, work on existing projects and support the enterprise.

Public speaking is a skill many people struggle with. While it may come naturally to some people, others need instruction in order to increase their confidence, improve their writing ability, or just refine their skills. As a public speaking instructor, you’ll be able to help these students. Keeping class sizes small,  or even teaching one-on-one, allows you to run this business from home.

Start small, and then grow your empire once you have learned the ropes of online recruitment.

I can’t work at home very well with my kids here, even with my husband watching them. The older boys aren’t an issue because they’ve been trained to behave when I’m WFH but the little guy has a ways to go. So I only WFH under extreme circumstances, or when I’m sick. I definitely feel like I take the easier way out by working in an office instead of trying to get stuff done at home!
The benefits of a work-at-home job are appealing. In a telecommuting job, even if you work part-time or on an as-needed basis, during that time you are free to define your hours, you don’t have to commute, you can work  in your pajamas (if that’s how you roll)...and you can even a write off a small portion of your home office at tax time. But what are some of the most lucrative and satisfying work-from-home job opportunities?
These days, more than ever before, business ideas that people though were exclusive to machines, are now being made with the hands. One of such businesses is the bag making trade. As such, you can start a bag making business. This means that you may decide to be the designer, who comes up with designs whilst, other make it. Conversely, you may want to learn the skill outright, and engage in its creation and finishing. This is a great business for stay at home mums, as well as working class mothers.
Tip #13: Be fully present in your current activity. That means that if you’re home and spending time with your family/kids you’re doing that 100%. It’s so so easy to sneak in work here and there when you’re remote and work from home. It can be so hard to separate the two so I find myself being really conscious of this. When I’m playing with my daughter, I’m fully present (physically and emotionally) doing just that – trying not to think about work etc.
- Work-from-home mothers and fathers share some perks with stay-home moms and dads, in that they have greater freedom to pick up sick kids from school (the joys of parenting!) and generally have an advantage in being able to prioritize family needs, from doctor appointments, to school plays, to everything in between (provided their employer does, indeed, enable this sort of flexibility).
Cashcrate is my favorite site and the one that I’ve received the most checks from. I’ve been doing it for about a year now and honestly have never had a problem with it.You earn money by doing free offers, surveys, watching ads, shopping online, participating in live contests and referring your friends and family members to the site.Cashcrate is one of the most popular GPT sites having 990,000+ members.I have made close to $3000 using this great Get Paid To Site. The amazing part is I've spent only about 6 hours a week on this site and I've earned $300 in 1 month! I can't urge you enough to try it out for yourself.
If you have experience with marketing, SEO or a knack for getting people excited about the products and services you use on a regular basis, think about refining your skills and putting them to work as a small business marketing consultant in your region—especially if you can become a local SEO expert and can help local clients rank higher in their search results as your side business idea. Businesses of all sizes are in constant need of bringing in more customers, which is where you come in with your business idea. Start by pitching some of these small business marketing ideas by Brian Downard and you'll be sure to impress the first set of clients you begin working with in your area.
I really like this article! I came across it before I had my son 7 months ago amid a flurry of people telling me that ‘I would have no time to do anything’ once the baby arrived. My husband and I read this post and felt instantly better – finally someone who didn’t say that life will end post-kids! Now, 7 months on, I really agree that you can continue working towards your professional and personal goals with a baby. It just takes some team work and prioritization. I often come back and re-read your post as it’s so inspiring to see someone who is living the reality of being productive professionally, whilst at the same time caring for a baby. Thank you!

For example, you may be a keen reader. You could create a website/blog and review books that you have read. Give your honest opinions on books that you liked/disliked and let your website visitors comment on whether they agree with you or not. On each review you can supply an affiliate link to Amazon to the specific book you are talking about. This way, when someone reads your review and decides to buy it, they can click on your affiliate link and buy it through that, which means you receive a commission.

I freelance a bit, along with doing some VA (virtual assistant) work for other bloggers. I also earn a bit with sponsored posts, affiliate sales, and advertising on my blog. I have also self-published a book, Intentional Marriage, and create printables which I sell in my shop. – Crystal at Serving Joyfully (Shannon here! Crystal is one of several VAs that I work with to help me with the blog. She is an absolute wiz with graphics and is responsible for many of the pretty images you see here on Affording Motherhood.)
Their training is done online and is self-paced. You could finish the program in 4 months but 6 months is probably more realistic. They do however give you up to a year to get it all done. Their program is approved by the American Health Information Management Association and the American Academy of Professional Coders. They work with companies such as CIOX Health, Lexicode, OS2-HCS, TrustHCS, Inovalon, Mckesson that hire their grads to work from home right out of the program.
If you have something you're skilled at and very passionate about, you can turn that winning combination into offering your services with one-on-one online coaching as a solid side business idea. Just be sure to implement your own opportunity management system so you don't get caught up working with clients that you can't measurably help. Elmira Strange will give you a step-by-step plan for putting your skills and experience to work by developing an online coaching business—even as a side business idea in the time around your full-time job—so be sure to check out her course on Udemy for a jump start on this side business idea.
Valentine's day. Birthdays. Weddings. The list goes on and on—throughout the course of a year, there are dozens of occasions when people need to order flowers. What's more is that once you're up to speed with this business idea, your costs can stay relatively low if you know where to source your flowers, and typical margins are in the neighborhood of 300% (or more) on cut flowers which makes this a particularly profitable side business idea in the right geographic area. Check out this amazing interview with floral designer, Sara Tedford of Ladybird Poppy to hear about how her floral design company started out as a side business idea of doing weddings and events for her friends and family.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, approximately 21% of employees work from home on an average day. I’m sure a significant proportion of these people are mothers who are taking care of their children simultaneously. It can be hard to juggle so many responsibilities, but the key to making it work is finding a job with the perfect fit – one that has built-in flexibility, reasonable compensation and engages all of your greatest strengths.
If trends hold steady, there will be an estimated 6 billion smartphones in the world by 2020. This is an incredible opportunity for those who want to break into this market, as there will be increased demand for products to protect these expensive investments from dents, scratches, and breaks. The majority of phone cases are sold online to decrease overhead costs. However, retail storefronts can be a good investment for entrepreneurs depending on the target customers.

I know I sound like an old curmudgeon, but I’m still surprised when parents opt to skip childcare/daycamp costs for well known in advance school breaks and work from home while the kids are just stuck in front of TVs while their parents work in the basement. From an experience where I saved PTO for those times or put kids in childcare/camp, it seems very strange to me. It’s just weird.
Thank you so much for writing this – your stance that you can (and DO) remain yourselves after baby comes along is so refreshing! We are eagerly awaiting our first (due Nov.) and plan on incorporating her into our active outdoor life as much as possible! Both my husband and I work from home full-time. He has an ultra flexible schedule with only 2 scheduled conference calls each week. He works quickly and often does not have to put in 40 hours. My worry is working around my schedule (and honestly, I think I’m only worried because this is something I have never done before). I only have 1 scheduled conference each week, but sometimes other meetings pop up. Even though I am supposed to work 40 hours per week on a somewhat “normal” schedule, I often only have to be available to respond to emails (not actively working on the computer). I have some flexibility, but not sure if I will have as much as my husband. Anyhow – I really hope we can make it work! I want to maintain ourselves and our love of being outside, be able to work from home and take good care of our daughter! Thank you for sharing some positive news!

Obviously some of these small business ideas have more earning potential than others, but what they all share in common are relatively low barriers to entry and the flexibility to work at them for a limited amount of time per week. I also tried to focus on side business ideas that have some sort of online component to them, since that's what I love most.
There is a demand for finding reliable home improvement contractors, and this is a business opportunity you can address. You can start a home-based contractor referral service that connects homeowners with prescreened, reliable home improvement professionals like painters, plumbers, carpenters and electricians. Contractors will then pay you a prenegotiated commission on work secured and you can keep your service free for the homeowners.

I'll be the voice of (slight) dissent, I guess? It's not impossible. When I had my daughter, I was a single parent attending college full time (online) and doing a decent amount of freelance work. I had her in the middle of the semester, and was working from my hospital room while she was in the NICU. We kept that up for the better part of two and a half years.

It’s unfortunate that more offices aren’t taking advantage of the technology available to them, but for those who can work from home, it is one step closer to taking full control of your own priorities!

I am a stay at home Mom with a part-time work from home job. For the past 3 years, I have had the blessing of being the secretary and office manager for a small Hydrovacing company. I have been able to do all the work from home until this past summer. It’s had it challenging times, but I’ve learned so much and have knowledge on how to start your own business because of it. Now, our youngest, age 3, goes with me 3 days a week for a few hours. We have 4 children- 16, 14, 7 and 3. I have also sold things on local sales sites for extra income. I have been at home since our oldest was born. We’ve made sacrifices, but didn’t see them as sacrifices. It was choices to support our decision to have me at home. We made that decision before we married almost 23 years ago. And, we are both thankful and blessed by it.

So, be sure to give yourself some quiet time every day, even if it is just five minutes. – Michelle Morton

Believe it or not, it is possible to actually reach a woman named Peggy (and not a man with a Russian accent) when you call customer service. That’s because of the homeshore movement, which is trying to hire more independent contractors to work from home on customer service issues. If you’ve got a phone line and an internet connection, you can work from home as a call center rep. Median salary: $30,460.
Another element of our parenting philosophy is encouraging independent play. Since birth, we’ve encouraged Babywoods to entertain herself with us nearby. As a curious 17-month-old, she adores inspecting every corner of every room and dragging toys around to new and different locations. She entertains herself well and puzzles through how to use complex toys on her own.
Obviously, this business is best suited for someone who has a long history of practicing meditation. Yeah, in addition to all the above, snickerdoodle's comment is astute: your employer may not even let you do this, assuming that your desire to work full-time = keeping your current job, or having a similar FT job with another employer. My employer is pretty friendly to parents in terms of allowing telecommute arrangements, etc., but if you are doing regular telecommuting and you have a child you have to show proof to HR that you have some sort of childcare arrangement in place before they'll allow you to do it.

I’m a former lawyer turned entrepreneur with Rodan+Fields (makers of ProActiv, the acne system). After welcoming my twin girls, I decided traveling, long hours, and dial-ins were no longer for me. I wanted to work from home on a part-time basis and Rodan+Fields has allowed me to do that. If you’re interested in earning a solid part-time income on your own terms, I’d love to talk to you!
We chose this schedule because I wanted to quit my 9-to-5 and be the primary caregiver. While this might, at first blush, appear to conform to traditional gender roles, I assure you nothing about our relationship is conservative or regressive. Mr. FW and I are both feminists committed to an egalitarian partnership and it was my express desire to transition into this role.

Finding a work-at-home job can seem daunting at first, particularly for moms who may already have a full life. But when trying to make the shift from the office to a work-at-home job, the first thing to consider is whether you can telecommute your current job. If the answer is no, you may want to start thinking about moving your career in a different direction.
I'm not sure what I would do if I could do this over, since we were looking to maximize our income for a limited time to pay the mortgage off and I always knew there was an end date in sight. But you don't have an end date, you want to do it indefinitely. I can't recommend it. I think it will be stressful and hard. It was like being a frog in a pot of water getting hotter and hotter: It wasn't a good situation to be in but I couldn't see clearly enough to recognize that and jump out of the pot. Anyway, good luck to you!
I began blogging publicly a year and a half ago, honing my writing skills, networking, and gathering social media marketing skills. I’m now earning income as a freelance writer (which was my main goal in starting my blog), in addition to a being a content curator and blogger liaise for two companies. I blog at www.lo-wren.com, but you can also find me writing for The Huffington Post, Mamapedia, BlogHer, and Scary Mommy. – Lauren Stevens at www.lo-wren.com

My advice would to try and have their day as structured as possible. Kids thrive on routine. They want to know/need to know what is expected of them and when. Make sure you take the time to spend with them also … that is the whole point, after all, right? I would also recommend making sure you know what your priorities are and focusing on them. Personally, my house is low on my priority list so it gets the least amount of attention. If I have a break from work I don’t want to spend it cleaning I want to spend it playing a game with the kids or getting them and me outside for some fresh air. – Summer Price

Income generation opportunities can come in the form of affiliate marketing and advertising on your website or from companies who ask you to review and blog about their products. Look for ways to get traffic to your website through social media, search engine optimization and by getting involved in the wider blogosphere (networking with and commenting on the blogs of others in your niche).

You can find useful information on how to make money from surveys and which survey sites are best at Real Online Surveys.
