Soon after the column appeared I got a call from the Boston ABC TV affiliate WCVB TV “The Boston Channel.”  They wanted to get a local angle on dads returning to work. One at-home dad, David Hubbard from Stow, MA had a particularly interesting story because his experience disclosing his at-home dad status on his resume yielded positive reactions instead of the negative results reported by the other dads. Dave is back at work at in the same position at the same company he left before he began his career break in 2004. He’s Director of Government Contracts for DSD Laboratories. Following is his “Relaunch Success Story"
Be honest. When you think of work-from-home jobs, what comes to mind? Data entry? Customer service? While it’s true that some jobs just scream “work from home,” you might be amazed by the number of industries that offer flex-friendly positions. Although there are work-from-home jobs in practically every industry, the top fields for flexible jobs are medical and health, HR and recruiting, computer and IT, and education and training, as well as accounting and finance, government, and travel and hospitality.
A great way to make new connections in your area is to join professional organizations. These can be as general as a chamber of commerce or as specific as the Public Relations Society of America. These groups look great on your resume and they are a perfect way to get to know people in your profession. In addition, many times these organizations post new job openings on their website or announce them at meetings, before the general public knows about them.

There is no clear data on the number of stay-at-home dads because the Census Bureau doesn’t define that category. The most recent data can be found from a Pew Research report in 2013, which found that “2 million U.S. fathers with children in their household were not working outside the home…”  The data assumes that these Dads were caregiving for the kids.

For Jen and Jon, the “traditional” roles of what a man and wife are supposed to do in marriage presented a challenge early on in the transition to bread-winning wife and stay-at-home husband. “Earlier in this arrangement, every once in a while I would find myself becoming resentful that he got to be with the kids I was ‘stuck’ working,” confesses Jen. “I came from a traditional household, so when I was thrust into the role of breadwinner, and having those financial pressures, it was a lot to deal with.”
At iRelaunch we run Return to Work Conferences all over the country that have been attended by hundreds of people. Typically, five to ten percent of them are men. We have participated in numerous programs sponsored by employers and universities and have seen the same numbers, most recently at Goldman Sachs’ New Directions program held just a few weeks ago. Additional studies show that during the first five years of a child's life, the father's role is more influential than the mother's in how the child learns to manage his or her body, navigate social circumstances, and play.[15] Furthermore, a 1996 study by McGill University found that the "single most important childhood factor in developing empathy is paternal involvement in childcare".[16] Children that have a strong paternal influence have more nurturing abilities.[25] It has been researched in The Role of the Father in Child Development, that in general, children with stay-at-home dads develop attachments at infancy.[26] The study further concluded that fathers who spent time alone bonding with their children more than twice per week brought up the most compassionate adults.[16]
