In Ron’s case, he maintains that if he could do it all over again, he would still choose being a stay-at-home dad. “I have asked myself the same question,” confesses Laura. “And my answer is also that I would have chosen to work. Overall, I love working and having a career. I also don’t feel like I missed out on any of my children’s’ activities as they were growing up.”
Being a stay-at-home dad can be considered full-time work in and of itself; the key is establishing a routine where you carve yourself out some time during the day to actually get work done. This could mean starting your day before sunrise (before everyone else in the house wakes up), using your child(ren)’s naptime to be productive, or working once your significant other gets home. The keys to making this work are discipline (it can be hard to hunker down and be productive while at home), organization skills (your time becomes limited) and establishing a routine with your partner (they will need to understand that when you’re “off duty” after 6pm, for example, it’s because you might have a deadline to contend with).

When the 35-year-old's first child was born in 2015, it coincided with the sale of his restaurant payment app company. As CEO, he planned to take off three to six months to help care for his newborn. But once his company sold, he was in a position to take an indefinite leave.

What I loved most about interviewing these couples is that they took everything about their “nontraditional” marriages and completely owned it. While I’m over here analyzing every square inch of my marriage and wondering if my husband secretly hates me because all I can cook is lasagna and the occasional Crock-Pot meal, these couples are just like, this is what works for us and who cares what anyone else thinks?
After less than two years in corporate America and the realization that I could do it better myself (I’m a quick study), I donned a new wardrobe and began working from home in 1989. Within two years, our first child was born. Two years later, she had a sibling. By 1997, three little Zbars were traipsing around the home office, occasionally driving me nuts, to be sure, but also forcing me to improve my workstyle – and accommodate their needs.

Laura recounts how, in going out with her girlfriends, many of whom were stay-at-home moms, she was in the unique position to hear the gripes of wives talking about their husbands not coming home at night on time — and realize that their complaints were the same as her own husband’s. “Since I was friends with SAHMs, I listened and learned a lot about their frustrations which turned out to be about the same as Ron’s,” she remembers.
Akerson: Yes, absolutely! Work-from-home-moms are incredible – even if your target customers aren’t mothers. They know how to maximize their time, because they are moms, and know what a resource time is. Many are also willing to work for less than you would pay if hiring full-time, simply because they want the flexibility of still putting their family first. And you don’t have to pay for a full-time role if what you need is less than that. You also don’t have to worry about employees taking sick time to stay home and care for sick kiddos, as they’re already working from home. Work-from-home-moms are amazing.

Sorry, guys. But if you’re searching for a work-from-home job because you’re a parent and have grand visions of diligently cranking through your workday sitting in a comfortable home office while your toddler peacefully plays with blocks beside your desk, then you’re delusional. That’s a highly romanticized notion. Balancing even a part-time work-from-home job and the responsibilities of parenting is tricky. There are still bosses, meetings, and work that needs to be turned in. And instead of focusing exclusively on doing that work, you must squeeze it in between naps, washing bottles, or picking your child up for daycare. It can be incredibly stressful and you often end up working more hours than you would if you had just dragged yourself into an office.
Besides, my wife staying at her job has benefited us in many ways. She works a non-traditional schedule of three 12-hour shifts per week, so she has four days when she can stay at home and help raise our baby. This gives me more time to work on my now full-time business to increase my income. Plus, her job allows us to keep semi-subsidized employer health benefits that save us a significant amount of money. While my benefits were slightly better, her benefits are still infinitely better than buying health care independently.
