Your reasons sound a lot like mine for staying at home. I quit after my second, largely because after daycare I would be bringing home $200 a month. I figured I could save that much by being home and not having to outsource things like cleaning/cooking/baking, etc. I worked from home for a few months, then was done. Now I do a little free lance writing when I have time, but it’s a bit harder now they aren’t babies who nap a bunch!
Other things that you need to be wary of are micro-jobs (i.e., small jobs that don't take much time to complete). Although these can be legitimate, a lot of companies will require you to reach certain earning thresholds before they pay you. And it can take a very long time to reach those thresholds. You also need to be clear about your form of payment because you may not realize that you are getting paid in gift cards or bitcoins. Here are some other tips for avoiding stay-at-home mom job scams:
I have three under three and stay at home, but I wanted the ability to still have measurable goals, connect with adults, and earn some extra income for our family- I became a Rodan + Fields skin care consultant a few months ago. We tried not to have the “who does more” fight, because we were both always “on.” But I shouldered more emotional work, which did make me resent him at times.

If you look back, you'll see that I previously labeled these monthly reports "Passive Income" and "Residual Income." But over the years, I've realized that the term "passive income" is not well defined in the online world. It's also not very accurate. Most of us work very hard to build, nurture and grow our "passive income" streams. Of course, even neglected, they may still produce income, and I understand that -- after a year of not posting on one of my blogs, I still get a trickle of Adsense earnings and affiliate sales.

There are some good jobs on this list, but I just want to warn others that some of the gigs on this list are very low paying. Some Fiverr sellers do very well, but the majority of gigs don’t earn more than $50 a month. Also, keep in mind that if you are writing 1,000 word articles for $25 each for bidding site clients, you will burn out because you’d have to write a ton of those to equal the wages you’d make at a minimum wage job.

I think we should focus on making it easier for parents to return to the workforce after a hiatus. I’m pretty sure I haven’t gotten dumber or less skilled in my years off ????, but we do still have that perception of stay at home moms being unskilled! Addressing discriminatory hiring practices as part of the wage gap would help increase families’ abilities to make a choice that works for them.
I’d be lying if I said being a work-from-home mom seemed like a dream job when I was younger. For a long time, I was so career-consumed and self-absorbed that I envisioned skipping over parenthood and embracing aunthood for eternity. I loved kids—I babysat, substitute taught and obsessed over photos of my nephews—but I wanted to travel the world, climb the corporate ladder and spend my free time at the spa. This is such a great discussion thread. Everyone’s circumstances are different. There is no one way fits all and I think finding a creative solution is key. If I had been working a high-paying job that required a good amount of time and would lead to career advancement I would have been more inclined to put my first in daycare. I wasn’t. My job was very fulfilling, but I felt that I wanted to stay home more. I did some freelance work for my old employer while she was a baby and have stayed in touch and they have made it clear they would love me back at some point. Now I have three kids three and under (surprise! Twins!) and I’m so glad that we don’t have to pay for daycare for all three of them. My husband is also working a position now that allows him to work from home when he wants to. He can’t be much help to me, but it has allowed him to see how busy and stressful my days can be. Now he can watch out for our older daughter while I run an errand with the twins. It’s been a great set up for us.

It is extremely important for mothers to find a balance between work and home. When you find a legit stay at home position, it may become even harder to find that balance because of the comfort of being home some of us may not be able to take work as serious not being in a work environment. My advice as a stay at home mom is to remember what and who you are doing this for. what is your motivation? my motivation is my daughter. she keeps me going and i will never give up knowing that she is counting on me. I wonder how many young couples buy into the line that “they must have 2 incomes to manage these days.” I wish we had tried harder to live on one income before DS came along back in 1988. Having said that, when the company DH worked for closed down and he decided to try to go out on his own, my benefits were invaluable. DH was in partnership with this other guy for 10 years, and what he learned about himself and other people was a real eye-opener. If we hadn’t had my income, he wouldn’t have had the chance to grow personally and professionally.

4. Playdates: Now that the neighborhood mamas see you at home during the day, they’re going to knock on your door (or more likely text) and ask if your kids want to play. Built-in babysitter, right? Not so fast. The neighborhood moms aren’t inviting just your kiddo over — they want you to come too. Or maybe they’ve decided you should play catch-up and host the next few playdates. Consider how you want to deal with this type of situation. This might mean creating “playdate time” in your daily schedule, or prepping a brief, but firm, explanation as to why you can’t have extra kids running around your home.

When you’re a mom, sometimes it feels like the grass is always greener somewhere else. If you work, you wish you were home with the kids; but when you’re home 24/7, it can feel like a big mistake. Working at home with the kids gives you a balance of both worlds — you can feel productive and earn some cash without stepping away from your parental role during the workweek.

Child care costs are insane, and I know so many parents having to make that tough decision of whether to keep two jobs and the infinitesimal monetary benefit of the second job over the cost of day care. Child care should be paid for by the state so that people don’t have to make these stupid life decisions between the lesser of two evils. It’s a decision that would tear me up inside if I had to make it. I think you two are doing it the right way.

The first year and a half of my son’s life, I was a work-at-home mom, known as a WAHM. I thought it was the best way to have everything I wanted—a career as a freelance writer, a child, flexibility—but it took an immense emotional and physical toll on me. Our culture prides working from home as the holy grail of job arrangements. But doing it with a newborn, my vision was blurred from exhaustion. I worked when we could afford a babysitter and when he slept, if he slept. With few breaks from each other, he tended to nurse every other hour. I felt like a busy water cooler for a parched coworker. And after he turned one, my son had five months of back-to-back viruses or infections. A feverish toddler literally screams “no” when you need a bathroom break.
The WAHM appears to be the mother of all corporate victories, one that touts the elusive “balance” between motherhood and career. The gender equality win we’ve been fighting for! Brava! Educated women get to have their babies and their jobs. Their minivans and their tenure tracks. Their 401Ks and their families. Their cakes. All the cakes! And eating them proudly with their paychecks.
Additionally, the occurrence of moms staying home is also increasing. The number of moms staying home reached a low of 23 percent in 1999 and then grew to 29 percent by 2012.3 It is clear that more people are wanting to work and spend more time at home. And as more people—employers and employees alike—realize the benefits that come from telecommuting, it becomes more likely that you will find legitimate online jobs for stay-at-home moms (SAHMs), along with other jobs that don't involve the use of a computer.

We don’t have kids, but my two siblings have 2-3 children each and they have different solutions – a frugal one and a not so frugal one. Sister 1 bought a rather cheap home next to my mom out in the country so she watches the two boys 2-3 times a week at her house (one is not in school yet) while she goes to work. She also is a single parent. Sister 2 lives in a major city and has a nanny come three days a week for 12 hour days to watch two kids (costing $40k/year). They have super intense jobs with long hours. Now that she has a third baby, her nanny quit and they are having a hard time finding a (legal) nanny who wants to watch three kids for 10 hours a day. Maternity leave is over, they are in the middle of paternity leave, so they will figure it out soon hopefully! One staying home will not work due to the amount of student loans and mortgage they have. Different solutions for different people even in the same family. There there’s me; no kids, retiring early.

After earning a college degree in English, I married and had three kids. So now I’m a self taught seamstress and mostly take in clothes for alterations. With baby #3 very new, I’m not taking in much right now; my goal by next year is to bring in $800/mo. Daycare is super expensive all over the country for the most part, but I’m so glad you’re finding success with freelance writing! I have my family help out a lot with childcare when I need it but my son is a older and just finished kindergarten so he’s in school for most of the day. I still would like to be more present when he gets out of school so I’d love to turn my freelance writing side hustle into a full-time gig and just work during school hours and when I can during the summer. We’ll see how it goes.
It’s always a good idea to play to your strengths no matter what kind of job you’re looking for, but especially so when looking for a work from home job. Why? When my first son was born, I was able to split my days, working three days in the office and two days at home.
