Our child care arrangements have changed over the years – from Grandma, to full-time daycare, to being home with me while on extended maternity leave. The current arrangement is that the two youngest ones go to daycare three days per week. Mr. Smith (who makes less than me) stays home with them one day per week, and my mom helps me with them while I work from home one day per week. It’s not ideal, but it give us some semblence of balance, for now. Mr. Smith likes working – in construction. So while it might have made financial sense for him to stay at home, he can’t do his work while watching the kids.
I am a better mother and a better wife because of my work and my community. I am finding myself, and I am finding others like me. In fact, as much as I’ve experienced a shift in perspective about working and motherhood, I am raising children who see that creating a professional life and raising children are not mutually exclusive. Both my daughters and my son are seeing that it’s possible to flourish on all fronts, and frankly, as a working mom, that seems like the best kind of feminist revolution.
Professor of psychology at Arizona State University, Suniya S. Luthar, Ph.D., examined the work-life satisfaction in new mothers. Her research shows the most satisfied are those who wanted to go back to work and did, as well as those who wanted to stay at home and did. The study didn't address WAHMs, but she says from her own parenting experience, being a WAHM is “just not doable. It’s a distraction. One ear is always listening for them. The kid is looking for mom to feel safe…. You’re not going to get your work done properly, and you’ll end up being a mass of nerves and guilt.”

As I mentioned, now that I’m down to 2 hours of work time during the day, I’ve instituted a new system of early work hours. 3 days a week I wake up at 4:45, roll out of bed and head to Starbucks for a 2 hour work session. So far, so good. Although I don’t enjoy getting out of bed that early, it feels amazing to start the day on top of my inbox and ahead of the game rather than watching work pile up until nap time. My stress levels are down, my productivity is up and my after-dinner hours are now open to connect with my husband. You may not feel you need to leave the house but I do. It keeps me focused and since my daughter is still breastfeeding I can’t be in the house if she wakes up and expect to continue working.
If it turns out that working from home works for you, there’s no limit to what you can do. Some moms have built incredible business empires beginning at home – such as Julie Aigner Clark of Baby Einstein, or celebrity chef and restaurant owner Paula Deen. If your dream is to make some money while being at home with your kids, there’s no reason why you can’t succeed – perhaps beyond your wildest dreams.

Hi Emily! yes that must be such a tough decision to make. It sounds like you have a great recipe for success for moving to a work at home situation with your background and experience. I always recommend that women stick with what they already know when making this transition. One option would be to look for companies that offer remote working for their employees, many do and many will if you ask. Alternately, you could start your own consulting business. Maybe there’s a specific need that you see in your line of work that you feel you could fill. I know it is scary to take that leap and leave your secure corporate job. In the end, I guess it comes down to which option is best for your family (and I am not saying there’s a ‘right’ answer here. It’s tough, so no guilt either way!) Kids having time with their parents is important, moms having the margin to love their kids well is important, putting a roof over your heads and food on the table is also crucial! I would also add that maybe you can think through changes you can make on the spending side to help offset the loss of income if you quit your job to work from home. In fact, you may actually save money by staying home simply by commuting less, having more time to cook rather than eat out, less childcare etc. I pray you’ll find just the right thing for you and your family Emily!
Another drag of the work-at-home mom daily grind, is social and professional isolation. For an introvert like me, I think, I could care less about interacting with humans face-to-face all day. The less humans, the better. However, I know the corporate dance. I used to do it. There is a certain amount of small talk that goes a long way towards staying in good standing with management and securing one’s future. I also know how humans work — we all feed off of some level of engagement and connection with one another. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t live in communities or ever get lonely. 
Pro tip for baby stimulation: See if your local library has a summer reading program for babies. No, really! We have a great one in Denver inspired by the ALA’s Every Child Ready to Read program. The “reading” activities for babies are actually Read, Write, Talk, Sing, Play, and the specifics for last summer were things like “finger paint with pudding” or “make up a song with your child’s name in it.” But don’t worry–even babies need their down time :-). Totally cool for her to roll around on the floor a little while you work.
Seven years ago, before I had children, I taught music full-time at a conservatory. I had 47 students. I left the conservatory when I had my first baby, and now I teach piano lessons in my home part-time during the day. I have four little ones, and the piano moms and dads babysit for me while I teach their children. In return, they get a discount on lessons. 

I wonder how many young couples buy into the line that “they must have 2 incomes to manage these days.” I wish we had tried harder to live on one income before DS came along back in 1988. Having said that, when the company DH worked for closed down and he decided to try to go out on his own, my benefits were invaluable. We considered all of the following: should we move to where our families are to avail ourselves of free daycare? That didn’t make sense to us since we knew we wanted to end up in Vermont and, we didn’t think it’d be fair to suddenly saddle our parents with their granddaughter’s care. Akerson: Yes, absolutely! Work-from-home-moms are incredible – even if your target customers aren’t mothers. They know how to maximize their time, because they are moms, and know what a resource time is. Many are also willing to work for less than you would pay if hiring full-time, simply because they want the flexibility of still putting their family first. And you don’t have to pay for a full-time role if what you need is less than that. You also don’t have to worry about employees taking sick time to stay home and care for sick kiddos, as they’re already working from home. Work-from-home-moms are amazing.
I used to think achieving work/life balance is possible if I try hard enough. Like many of you, I have my mom goals and working woman goals. I was in your shoes….about 22 years ago. I never planned on being a SAHM. After my daughter was born I found out how hard it was to hand her over to a caregiver every day and how much I missed her during the day. Good for you! I’m due next month and plan on dropping one of my two part time jobs therefore just leaving me to cover about 18 hours a week (my husband is a teacher and ends his day early) of childcare. We are super fortunate that we live by family that can help us with childcare, at least temporarily. But our maternity leave system in the states is so awful that it really puts a lot of people in difficult situations. I feel very fortunate to be able to work a skilled part time job but have been very surprised at how mom-unfriendly my employer is. It seems to me that we need to be encouraging more people to have babies and our current maternity leave/daycare/preschool set up does not do this at all. Your partner can also be a great source of support. When Samuelson's husband, a teacher, arrives home at 3:30 p.m., she relies on him to take over kid duty. He can ferry their two children to the park and get dinner ready, and Samuelson will emerge a few hours later feeling finished with her day's to-do list. If your partner gets home after dinner, ask him to oversee bedtime -- you'll fit in at least an hour of work before the kids yell "Mom!" And once they do, you're there for the call, with no rush hour to race through.
When searching for legitimate work from home jobs, make sure to ask questions. If the job posting is limited with information, contact the poster and gather as much information before going any further. Find out how much the job paying: Is it Hourly or commission based? Also ask how often you get paid, and what equipment is required to do the job. With work from home jobs, the main communication is done online, so make sure you are perfectly clear of what is expected and have knowledge of red flags to avoid.

One could easily argue that I spend way too much money at Starbucks. And while I would agree, I’ve come to accept that it’s a part of my routine that has helped me build my business. I learned this from my cousin whom I greatly admire. She’s a very successful work-at-home mom and after dropping the kids off at pre-school in the morning she would swing through Starbucks as a ritual that marked the transition from being mom, to being at work. Your ritual doesn’t need to include Starbucks, it could be a mug of tea, changing clothes, turning on music, etc. The key is to find something that helps your transition from “home time” to “work time” during naps.
2. Multi-level marketing (MLM) companies—It is important to recognize that there are completely legitimate companies that can offer you great ways to earn extra money. It is likely that you know people who sell products for companies like Amway, Avon, and Tupperware, which are all MLM businesses. Many moms choose to sell products that they love for MLM companies because it often means that they can buy products at a discount and earn a few dollars on the side by selling items to their family, friends, and neighbors. But when signing up with an MLM company, there are important things to consider and watch out for. One study found that, in the first year of signing up, 50 percent of representatives dropped out. After five years, 90 percent of representatives dropped out. So these are not typically long-term opportunities. And, overall, they are often not profitable either. In fact, it was found that only one in 545 representatives made money after accounting for their expenses.9
1. Envelope stuffing—You are asked to send in money to receive a starter kit and told that you will be paid for every envelope that you stuff and send. What you end up receiving is a package telling you how to advertise the scam. The goal is that you advertise the same envelope-stuffing scheme to others and allegedly get a kickback for every person who responds to your ads and signs up.

14.  Speaking of weekends, I know there’s a million birthday parties, church functions, friends to hang with, etc.  Pick one or two (at the most) outings & give your family time to recover from the week & for the week ahead.  I know this is a hard one, but stick to it.  You all need that downtime together–give it a whirl a couple of weekends and see how it feels.

9. Everyday Intrusions: Your “Hey, let’s have a playdate!” neighbor isn’t the only one who might not understand that “work” is a key part of being a work-at-home mom. From your own mom to your friends, people may start suddenly popping in, calling, or texting at all times of the day, thinking you’re just hanging out with the kids. As you make this transition, you’ll need a plan for politely handling people who don’t understand that yes, you are actually working. Just from home.

This is a big shift I’ve made recently. I love, love, love, receiving emails from readers and other bloggers and used to respond to 100% of them. Unfortunately I’ve gotten to a place where I just can’t do that anymore. I found I was doing it at the expense of being with my family or taking care of myself and my needs. Which does not reflect my values and doesn’t exhibit balance in my own life. So now, I have a form email response for many inquiries noting that I do have a program that includes unlimited email interaction/coaching and at this time in my life my time and energy needs to go to those valuable, committed, paying clients. Don’t let this scare you away from emailing me though! I still love them and respond to as many as I have time for. 🙂
Fast forward to 2003 – I was working part time while my 6 and 8 year olds were in school. Then lost my job and went through a divorce at the same time. That life crisis pushed me into a new space where I created a home business that worked for me but again, most people around me didn’t understand. I was able to be there for my kids, support myself, and build a business that takes care of me today, and I also mentor other SAHMs so that they can stay home with their kids and run a business on the side. 2. Email processing—Like envelope stuffing, you are not processing emails at all. You pay a starter fee in order to get information about how to set up a web page. You can pay an additional fee to have the company set up a web page for you. Then you are required to start running (and paying for) the same online ads that attracted you. Every time someone clicks on one and signs up, you are supposed to receive a commission.
I have two small children and found going to a workplace full time was incredibly difficult alongside meeting the children’s needs (and paying for childcare!). It was very scary leaving a place of security and heading towards the unknown of being self-employed and working from home. I believed in myself and took the plunge to teach online for an established company. It was the best decision. The job is fun and energising and I fit it when my kids are at school. My children are happy and calm and I’m not worried about finances.

I love this community and just discovered it! I’ve been searching and searching for something to help me transition from Work Out There, to Work At Home. I’ve actually worked at home as a designer for an advertising agency for the past 4 years when they suddenly dropped freelance contracts. I also have a 4 year old son, so I was not ready to go back to “Work Out There” after all that time with him as my little assistant. I am struggling with routine, and this forum seems to have a lot of answers! I do still work at home, thank goodness, as I started with a brand new network marketing company called RemeVerse (anti-aging, science-based skincare). I think network marketing is one of the most overlooked and underappreciated “careers” out there for WAHMs. There’s so much potential! Now just to get to a solid morning routine…. hi everybody!

While skipping office drama (and drinks with co-workers) seems like a trip to Disneyland, one must not forget that the office can be an idea oasis. Your co-workers got their jobs for a reason. Many of them have great ideas and diverse perspectives. Without little side chats in the hallways or water cooler talks, it’s possible that moms who work solely at home miss out on key conversations that could spark their creativity. 
I love your writing! Your posts always bring a smile to me face. Frugality does give us the freedom to make the choices that make us most happy at any stage of our lives. I just recently retired and frugality allows me to be satisfied with less and truly appreciate this new and exciting stage of my life. We really have to evaluate our ”needs”; staying healthy, being true to myself, developing my art and living in the moment far outweigh any material ”wants” I may have. Be happy!

Thank you for raising this — It sounds like she actually wanted to stay home and Mr F is cool with that, so this isn’t really a response to their particular choice or scenario. But most people who are at the age when they’re having babies are not anywhere near their peak earning potential. Choosing to stay at home for 1, 2, 5 or more years is exit-ramping from all of that potential income/career growth down the road, and most studies show that women never make up that lost ground when they do return to the workplace. It seems like it just perpetuates a bad cycle: Women make less money than men do, women have children and stay at home to care for them, sacrificing income and work opportunities, and then when they do go back to work they make less money because they now have less experience than people (men) who stayed in the game.

Returning to work was a struggle for me as well. I cried every time I thought about daycare or a babysitter for our son. Luckily my husband and I both had bosses who were willing to allow us flexible schedules. My husband was a post doctoral Fellow at the time and I was a technician. We both worked at the same Institute but for different Principal Investigators. We were able to split shifts – I worked 6-2:30 and DH worked 3pm until midnight (or later). That went on for almost a year until we moved for his next position, as an assistant professor and I became a stay at home mom. The move and life change was tough for me because we left our 30 acre farm to move to an urban home. I had worked at my job for 19 years and left behind many friends. Now we are hoping to retire to a farm we bought 2 years ago in the Finger Lakes Region of NY. I love following your homestead story and have zero regrets about being home with my kids.
I strongly suspected you had bought a house before you ever announced it after reading about your househunting. And I was sure you were not going to abandon Babywoods to daycare services and troop off to work. It may come as a surprise how much you bond with that little life once you can actually hold it in your arms. I remember crying all the way to work after dropping off my first baby at the sitter’s every morning. I was miserable. Fortunately we decided nothing was worth it, not even being poor if that’s what it took for me to be home full time. So I did get to raise my own children and be a homemaker. It is where this woman’s heart is. I am glad it is yours also. Babywoods is VERY happy about it, too!
